About The Position

This position is for a part-time, after-hours (3-7pm) Education Specialist position. Education Specialists are responsible for the specialized academic instruction (SAI) for students with disabilities. They manage a caseload of students, including scheduling and holding IEP meetings. Most communication is done virtually via video conference, teleconference, regular phone calls, email, instant messaging, and online. Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school teachers are part of a pioneering effort. Our teachers, therefore, need to share the School’s pioneering mission and approach. The After-Hours Education Specialist requires a firm understanding of how best practices from a classroom can be applied to our innovative model and an openness to explore the ways technology can help create new best practices.

Requirements

Reside in the state of California
Bachelor's degree
Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
Ability to support and guide adults, as well as students
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Organization and time-management skills
Excellent writing and grammar skills
Flexible schedule
Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, PowerPoint and experience using them in a professional capacity
Must hold a valid California Education Specialist Instruction Credential in Mild/Moderate or the new Mild/Moderate Support Needs AND/OR Moderate/Severe Disabilities or the new Extensive Support Needs California English Language Authorization
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database software
Experience moderating online meetings (Blackboard Collaborate, Webinar, Webex) for small and large groups

Nice To Haves

A California Multiple Subject Credential is highly desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

Support assigned students receiving Special Education services
Obtain academic present levels/baselines
Follow up with providers to confirm that IEP attendance, reports, and services are being completed
Schedule and hold individual monthly phone conferences with the general education teachers and for families of students assigned to caseload, follow up on any noted concerns
Complete ongoing contact logs
Be available for families on your caseload via phone and online during your contracted hours
Draft Assessment Plans and Prior Written Notices to send to Special Education Mentor within timelines
Email IEP related documents to the office to send out
Set up IEPs in online classroom, and follow up on attendees
Ensure all documents are submitted and available prior to IEP meeting (psych report, related services provider reports/goals, GE/Parent progress) and forwarded to IEP Team members.
Email/mail all reports to parents
Write and manage IEPs for students on caseload
Obtain signatures on Assessment Plans and/or IEP documents
Draft ITP’s and hold transition meetings, as appropriate
Monitor confidential tracking database for returned IEPs
Follow up with parental or teacher concerns
Work closely with Special Education Mentor and/or Program Specialist to report any concerns
Keep files in office compliant
Update appropriate database(s) with services, accommodations, IEP dates and other necessary information
Attend professional development meetings when applicable.
Attend Special Education department meetings when applicable.
Complete IEP Progress Reports for each student, including Related Services Provider progress as reported by the Related Services Provider
At the end of the year gather all individual student records and communications for digital archiving (IEP’s, monthly progress notes from teacher, parent input form, reports from evaluations, etc.)
Respond as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours to parent, student, teacher and administrative inquiries via phone and/or e-mail during regular work week
Attend all in person meetings as scheduled
