Aero Thermal Fluids Intern (Summer 2027) (Onsite)

RTX•East Hartford, CT
•$37,000 - $82,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Aero Thermal Fluids Intern at Pratt & Whitney will support design analysis for lubrication systems in aero-engines for commercial and military applications. The intern will work alongside engineers and technical experts to assess component design, performance, and durability, and learn how multiphysics phenomena affect jet-engine components and systems. The role includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat-transfer analysis, evaluation of lubrication-system designs and two-phase flow systems, and use of small analysis codes for flow and energy-transfer systems. The intern will collaborate with cross-functional teams to review and validate results, document findings, and present results to stakeholders. The internship is part of a program intended to provide meaningful engineering projects and an understanding of the aerospace industry and Pratt & Whitney’s operations.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and remain actively enrolled through the completion of the internship session.
  • Experience in fluid mechanics and heat transfer through coursework or projects.
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, or system analysis for flow and energy-transfer systems.
  • Experience writing analysis code using Python or an equivalent tool.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program or contract.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multiphysics phenomena analysis.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as NX or similar software.
  • At least 60 credit hours by the internship start.
  • Familiarity with CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or equivalent.
  • Exposure to AI-based data-analysis techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) or heat-transfer analysis to evaluate lubrication-system designs.
  • Analyze multiphysics phenomena, including fluid mechanics and heat transfer, to assess system performance.
  • Write and use small codes to analyze flow and energy-transfer systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to review and validate analysis results.
  • Contribute to the advancement of lubrication-system designs for jet engines.
  • Support evaluation of two-phase flow systems and their impact on performance.
  • Document findings and present results to stakeholders.
