About The Position

This course, JMU420H1 - Advanced Jazz Arranging & Orchestration I, aims to develop the skills necessary to produce arrangements for large ensembles. The principles of arranging will be applied to various combinations of instruments including but not limited to 5 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and voice. The class is scheduled for Wednesdays from 2-4 PM during the Fall term. The contract for this position is from September to December 2026. The salary for this position is $6,598.33, with an estimated course enrollment of 10 students and no TA support.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in jazz or equivalent professional experience
  • Extensive knowledge of jazz repertoire
  • Extensive experience as jazz arranger, composer, and band leader
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching jazz at the university level

Responsibilities

  • Define course objectives
  • Prepare course materials
  • Provide clear guidelines on course requirements and regulations
  • Teach classes as scheduled
  • Administer and evaluate student assignments
  • Prepare and submit final grades in accordance with policy
  • Maintain reasonable hours of student consultation outside scheduled class hours
