About The Position

The Middle School is seeking a part-time, exempt Adjunct Jazz Band Teacher to begin in August 2026. This position involves instructing beginning percussionists, managing beginner and intermediate sections, and preparing students for two annual concerts. The role also includes tracking student progress, providing narrative comments, and communicating with families. Candidates should possess experience teaching instrumental music to middle school students, with a focus on beginning instrumentalists and understanding adolescent development.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in music or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrated passion for music and a track record leveraging this passion into effective practices that encourage students to think creatively, engage with ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity.
  • Commitment to developing and practicing cultural competence in their teaching.
  • Ability to operate effectively in diverse environments while also interacting successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching and engaging middle school students in instrumental music.
  • Experience teaching beginning instrumentalists.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents, understanding their social-emotional and academic development.

Responsibilities

  • Availability (usually) between 12 and 1 pm, Monday through Friday
  • Instruct beginning percussionist students, a beginner section and an intermediate section
  • Assist with beginning and end-of-year organizational needs
  • Prepare students for two concerts per year, winter and spring, including help with pre-concert warm-up, set-up, and chaperoning
  • Track student progress and be able to write narrative comments on student performance and communicate with families as needed
  • Create developmentally appropriate curricula
  • Establish a supportive and engaging classroom environment for students
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, students, and families
