About The Position

The ADA Coordinator performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work to support ADA accessibility throughout the Parks and Recreation Department facilities, programs, and public spaces. This position implements ADA improvements identified in studies and assessments, including installation, modification, and repair of ramps, walkways, handrails, signage, doors, hardware, and other accessibility features. The employee conducts on-site field work to correct accessibility deficiencies, ensures facilities meet ADA and related federal and state accessibility standards, and supports the department in completing physical barrier-removal tasks. The role works closely with project managers, inspectors, and Parks staff to carry out construction tasks, maintain safe and accessible routes, and ensure ADA improvements are installed according to specifications and regulatory requirements. Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed the minimum requirements as outlined within the job description. Additional compensation based on licensure.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years of experience performing skilled or semi-skilled construction, carpentry, or maintenance work.
  • Must obtain ADA certification within first six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Demonstrated skills in general maintenance, carpentry, and construction sufficient to perform installation, modification, and repair of ADA accessibility components across Park properties.
  • Must be able to safely and effectively operate tools, equipment, and materials associated with construction and ADA accessibility installation work, including power tools, hand tools, fasteners, and measuring equipment.
  • Must have working knowledge of ADA accessibility standards as they relate to the physical installation of ramps, handrails, doors, hardware, walkways, signage, and related barrier-removal features.
  • Must be able to read and interpret construction drawings, sketches, site plans, and ADA installation diagrams to ensure proper placement and compliance with accessibility specifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience installing or repairing ADA features such as ramps, handrails, walkways, doors, hardware, signage, and related accessibility components is preferred.
  • Experience working in municipal or public sector environments is also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of the annual ADA work plan.
  • Drafting and updating the Departments ADA Self Evaluation and Transition plan.
  • Performing hands-on repairs, modifications, and construction tasks of Department facilities, programs, and policies to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations including Title II of the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 related to access and accommodations for Department infrastructure, parks, trails and facilities.
  • Performing skilled and semi-skilled construction tasks including installation of ramps, railings, surfacing, doors, and ADA improvements regarding concerns and inquiries on ADA issues.
  • Developing, updating, and maintaining database of items in progress or completed related to Title II projects, self-evaluations conducted, and the Departments transition Plan.
  • Integrating schedule of modifications with other County planning processes, including the 5- Year Transportation Improvement Program and Capital Improvement Plan.
  • Coordinating with project managers to maintain access/accommodations during capital project construction.
  • Leading County staff in an ADA coordination committee tasked with identifying and making recommendations to resolve departmental concerns relating to accessibility matters tied to the Transition Plan.
  • Developing and maintaining productive working relationships with County staff, and community stakeholders such as organizations representing individuals with disabilities.
  • Participating in community outreach and attending meetings of organizations representing people with disabilities.
  • Reading construction plans, diagrams, and ADA installation drawings, diagrams, sketches, and drawings which accompany assignments as required.
  • Performing other related work as required.
