About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is seeking an enthusiastic Academic Success Advisor to join our team. The School of Life Sciences provides academic advising to campus immersion students seeking degrees in Biological Sciences and supporting concentrations. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Academic Success Advisor is primarily responsible for developing relationships with our students to help them be successful in their academic goals and degree completion. The Academic Success Advisor supports their students through a range of in-person and virtual methods, including individual advising meetings (in-person, Zoom or phone), email, classroom instruction (if applicable), and other proactive outreach strategies utilizing technology tools to support student success. This is an in-person position based on-campus in Tempe, Arizona.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Evidence of a master's degree in counseling, higher education, health sciences, communications, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience applying a holistic approach to student development, success, and retention.
  • Experience providing academic advising, admissions, student retention, or other student services in a higher education setting.
  • Experience advising students in both in-person and virtual/remote environments.
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar customer relationship management (CRM) systems to communicate with and support students.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace applications, including Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar, and Gmail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and campus partners to promote student success.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage a high-volume student caseload.
  • Commitment to fostering a student-centered environment that supports academic achievement and persistence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive one-on-one academic advising and student support to undergraduate students, promoting academic success, retention, and timely degree completion.
  • Advise students on degree requirements, course planning, academic policies, career pathways, undergraduate research, internships, study abroad opportunities, and co-curricular experiences.
  • Develop individualized academic plans and assist students in identifying educational and professional goals aligned with their interests and strengths.
  • Monitor student academic progress using university systems (eAdvisor, Degree Audit, Major Maps, Advisor Portal, and related reporting tools) and implement proactive intervention strategies.
  • Conduct student outreach through appointments, email campaigns, phone calls, virtual meetings, and other communication platforms to support persistence and engagement.
  • Utilize Salesforce and other university technologies to document advising interactions, manage student caseloads, and track outcomes.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact, connecting students with campus resources, including tutoring, counseling, accessibility services, financial aid, career services, and other student support programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, academic units, and campus partners to provide coordinated, holistic support that enhances student success.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of academic advising initiatives, student success programs, and retention efforts.
  • Support enrollment, orientation, registration, graduation, and other academic administrative processes.
  • Resolve complex student concerns by evaluating options, identifying appropriate resources, and recommending effective solutions while exercising sound professional judgment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the School of Life Sciences' academic advising and student success mission.
