About The Position

Working collaboratively with the Director of the MSC and college advising staff, the Academic Advisor designs, develops, and implements programs to support the academic success of students regardless of college or department affiliation. The Mustang Success Center (MSC) provides comprehensive, centralized developmental academic advising to support undergraduate students with their successful transition and integration into Cal Poly. The center’s staff guides students to clear pathways of success to promote timely graduation.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive academic advising and critical support services to students seeking services from the Mustang Success Center, including Cal Poly Scholars and student athletes.
  • Utilize interviewing and counseling techniques to provide one-on-one academic advising, mentoring, career planning, personal support, and developmental group sessions.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and lead essential workshops targeted at first-year students milestones, including Orientation, Registration, Change of Major process, etc.
  • Drive continuous program improvement by developing a robust feedback loop and monitoring the overall impact on student success through data reports and ongoing assessment.
  • Recommend, lead, and coordinate the implementation and management of new programs promoting student success, exercising independent judgement to run initiatives like First Year Success Program, Orientation, and “early alert” system.
