About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking a professional Academic Advisor to provide comprehensive academic advising and career/major exploration services to all UNLV students. This includes students in the Exploring major, pre-professional students, non-degree-seeking students, and those in majors requiring additional support. The advisor will operate with independence, sound judgment, and initiative, delivering accurate, student-centered guidance across a broad range of academic programs. Responsibilities include providing on-call advising support across multiple centers, maintaining knowledge of all UNLV majors, minors, certificates, and microcredentials, and assisting students in clarifying academic goals, exploring majors, and making informed decisions to promote retention, progression, and timely degree completion. The role involves both independent contribution and collaborative partnership, proactively building relationships with advising leadership and colleagues to ensure consistent advising practices. Key duties include conducting one-on-one advising appointments via various communication methods (in-person, phone, email, video conferencing) and initiating proactive outreach for student success initiatives. The advisor must stay current on curriculum, policies, and procedures, and identify solutions to improve processes and enhance the student experience. Additional duties may be assigned by Student Success leadership. All positions in Academic Affairs contribute to the core mission of increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success by addressing systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services, programs, and support. This role is expected to embody the university's core values, demonstrating professionalism, collegiality, ethical conduct, transparency, and a commitment to inclusion. Evening and weekend work may be necessary, with occasional travel possible.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • One year of experience.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
