Funded by a U.S. Dept. of Ed. grant, the SOAR TRIO (Student Outreach and Academic Retention Student Support Services Program for Health Sciences / TRIO) Program serves between 160-180 students annually, consisting of low-income, first-generation and students with a disability within the College of Health and Social Sciences (CHSS). Under the direct supervision of the SOAR TRIO Administrative Lead, the SOAR TRIO Academic Advisor provides the following support and services to participants who are in CHSS majors ranging from freshman to senior: proactive academic advising, guidance, and retention support to encourage participant academic success; holistic assessment of the academic, career, and/or personal needs of participants to offer appropriate services and resources; assistance with transcript review, financial aid application, declaration of major/change of major, completing academic requirements, class registration, and graduate school exploration and resources; assists participants to complete program milestones, forms, and records; appropriately advocates for needs of participants to University entities/offices; assists to resolve problems that affects participant’s ability to succeed in their educational and career pursuits; makes appropriate referrals to campus support offices; assists with the creation and execution of program workshops, community building activities, tutoring support efforts and other activities as assigned; and is a liaison to internal and external campus partners and the public at-large. This is a grant-funded, full-time temporary three-year maximum position. The duration of the appointment cannot exceed three years from the date of hire and is reliant on continued grant funding.
