About The Position

The Future Talent Program offers cooperative education assignments lasting up to six months and including one or more projects. The 3D Technologies enterprise team partners with the business to address challenges and develop innovative solutions that make inventing accessible across the company. Its global DevOps team provides CAD, 3D printing, and other services that enable productivity and innovation. The 3DT Materials & Process team supports pipeline projects involving Quality & Compliance, particularly where current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) considerations apply. The team works to understand and address the distinct defect risks associated with 3D printing, improve fabrication capabilities for pharmaceutical applications, and maintain GMP compliance. The co-op will primarily support quality-control activities, including qualifying equipment, investigating defects, improving processes, conducting research, and characterizing materials. The role also includes hands-on post-processing and collaboration with other departments. This position is primarily onsite, with an expectation of onsite attendance four to five days per week. The candidate must be available to work full time for four to six months between April 2027 and September 2027, and must return to university after the assignment to complete graduation credit requirements.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Currently enrolled in an academic program and returning to university after the co-op assignment to complete credit requirements for graduation.
  • Available for full-time work for four to six months between April 2027 and September 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following: X-ray computed tomography (XRCT), optical microscopy, hardness testing, and tensile testing.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers, including any of CAD, slicing, printing, or printer repair.
  • 3D CAD experience.
  • Good documentation skills.
  • Experience in a second or third co-op cycle is likely to be a good fit.

Responsibilities

  • Qualify new printers and other equipment for service and help define processing conditions to ensure equipment meets minimum quality controls, including for FDM, SLA, and injection molding.
  • Systematically analyze print failures across a fleet to identify root causes.
  • Identify and document equipment failures and part defects to improve or expand Quality Control checks and Go-NoGo inspections, and help train new automated systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows in laboratory development and operations and 3D-printing production.
  • Conduct research to expand capabilities, such as 3D printing for injection molding, tablets or pills, and wetted-path components for bioprocessing.
  • Use material-characterization and imaging equipment, such as micro-CT, Izod impact, and HDT equipment, to understand defects and improve processes.
  • Participate in hands-on post-processing techniques, learning assembly practices and helping ensure parts meet quality standards before entering a pharmaceutical cleanroom.
  • Participate in outreach events, such as Take Your Child to Work Day, including staffing an event table.
  • Collaborate with different departments and gain exposure to multiple parts of pharmaceutical processes.
