MSD•Upper Gwynedd Township, PA
•$39,908 - $111,111•Onsite

About The Position

The Future Talent Program offers cooperative education opportunities lasting up to six months and involving one or more projects. This co-op is part of the Global Support Functions Division and supports the 3D Technologies enterprise team, which partners across the business to develop innovative capabilities and make inventing accessible. The team collaborates internationally to provide CAD, 3D printing, and other services that help colleagues be productive and innovate. The 3DT Materials & Process team supports pipeline projects involving Quality and Compliance, particularly where current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) factors apply. The co-op will primarily support quality control by helping the team understand and manage 3D-printing defects and process constraints, expanding fabrication capabilities for pharmaceutical applications while maintaining GMP compliance. The position is primarily onsite, with an expectation of attendance four to five days per week. The candidate must be currently pursuing a relevant degree, remain enrolled in an academic program, and return to university after the assignment to complete graduation credit requirements. Availability for full-time work for four to six months between April and September 2027 is required.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Currently enrolled in an academic program and returning to university after the co-op to complete credit requirements for graduation.
  • Available for full-time work for four to six months during April 2027 through September 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of one or more of the following: X-ray computed tomography (XRCT), optical microscopy, hardness testing, and tensile testing.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers, including CAD, slicing, printing, or printer repair.
  • Experience with 3D CAD.
  • Good documentation skills.
  • The role will most likely be best suited for someone in their second or third co-op cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Qualify new printers or other equipment for service and help define processing conditions to ensure equipment meets minimum quality controls, including for FDM, SLA, and injection molding.
  • Systematically analyze print failures across a fleet to identify root causes.
  • Identify and document equipment failures and part defects to improve or expand quality-control checks, Go-NoGo inspections, and training for automated systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows in lab development and operations and 3D-printing production.
  • Conduct research to expand capabilities, such as 3D printing for injection molding, tablets or pills, and wetted-path components for bioprocessing.
  • Use material-characterization and imaging equipment, such as micro-CT, Izod impact, and HDT equipment, to better understand defects and improve processes.
  • Participate hands-on in post-processing techniques, learning assembly practices and helping ensure parts meet quality needs for pharmaceutical cleanrooms.
  • Help staff outreach events, such as Take Your Child to Work Day.
  • Collaborate with different departments and gain exposure to multiple parts of pharmaceutical processes.
