About The Position

Chemical Process Development (CPD) brings together organic chemists, analytical chemists, and chemical engineers to design syntheses that supply new medicines. CPD develops safe, economical, sustainable, and robust small-molecule processes for clinical trials and medicine launches. The intern will join the analytical team and help advance analytical capabilities by developing and optimizing techniques including liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Over approximately 10 weeks, the intern will complete a guided research project with mentors on a PD Project Team, gaining industry and functional experience through challenging assignments, an introduction to BMS and its organizations, exposure to company leaders, mentorship, and a final presentation. The internship is scheduled for June 7 through August 13, 2027, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This is a temporary, time-bound internship and does not guarantee continued employment. Compensation is $45 per hour; limited benefits may be available depending on program structure, location, and local requirements.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university program pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Expected to graduate between Fall 2027 and 2028.
  • Authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and for the duration of employment.
  • Hands-on experience with LC (HPLC/UPLC).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and instrument-troubleshooting skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Include GPA on resume; the program requires a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automated or online sampling systems and instrument integration.
  • Experience with NMR techniques, particularly acquisition and interpretation of small-molecule NMR data; strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments evaluating the performance of liquid chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance instrumentation.
  • Develop data-analysis techniques to facilitate the generation of chemical insights.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to investigate representative small-molecule chemical reactions, including non-isolated intermediates and process-related impurities.
  • Analyze and interpret chromatographic and spectroscopic data to provide insight into system suitability and performance limits.

Benefits

  • Interns and co-op participants may be eligible for limited benefits depending on program structure, work location, and local requirements.
  • The internship program includes a mentorship program.
