According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, total nonfarm payroll increased by 339,000 in the month of May 2023. The unemployment rate rose by 0.3% to 3.7%. 

In May 2023, job gains occurred in professional & business services, government, healthcare, construction, transportation & warehousing, and social assistance.

  • Sabre: On May 4, 2023, Sabre announced the decision to cut 15% of its workforce, impacting roughly 1,100 jobs. The job cuts are part of an overall move to increase operational efficiencies. 
  • Shopify: On May 4, 2023, Shopify announced it would cut 20% of its workforce, impacting nearly 2,300 workers. This is the second round of major layoffs in under a year. Managerial roles were impacted, and the company is selling its entire logistics division. 
  • LinkedIn: On May 8, 2023, LinkedIn announced it would cut 716 jobs as demand wavers, while also shutting down its China-focused job application. 
  • Microsoft: On May 10, 2023, Microsoft announced more cuts to its wo​rkforce, following the 10,000 global layoffs that occurred in January 2023. These current cuts impact 158 jobs in the Seattle region. 
  • Nuro: On May 12, 2023, Nuro announced that it would lay off 30% of its workforce, impacting about 340 employees. These cuts occurred across the company as part of a restructuring. 
  • Cerner: On May 16, 2023, Oracle’s Cerner unit laid off more than 3,000 employees after the acquisition closed in June. Layoffs affected workers across teams including marketing, engineering, accounting, legal, and product. 
  • ZipRecruiter: On May 31, 2023, ZipRecruiter announced it would reduce its global headcount by approximately 20% of the total company, impacting ~270 employees. This was taken in response to current market conditions.

  • Leisure & Hospitality: added 48,000 jobs (hiring for food services and drinking places)
  • Construction: added 25,000 jobs (hiring for heavy and civil engineering construction)
  • Transportation & Warehousing: increased by 24,000 (hiring for transit and ground passenger transportation, couriers and messengers, and air transportation)
  • Social Assistance: rose by 22,000 (hiring for individual and family services)

  • Hyland Software: On April 3, 2023, Westlake-based Hyland Software announced that they were laying off 1,000 employees, or roughly 20% of its workforce. The company will be restructuring across departments and adjusting team sizes. 
  • Amplitude: On April 5, 2023, Amplitude announced the decision to reduce the company’s global team by 13%. Of the 99 roles total, the majority of those impacted were in the GTM organization. 
  • Redfin: On April 11, 2023, Redfin announced that it was laying off 201 employees as the housing market continues to retrench. This impacted about 4% of its workforce. 
  • Ten Square Games: On April 17, 2023, Ten Square Games announced plans to cut its workforce by 25%, or about 120 people. This cut is blamed on a challenging economy and an unstable mobile games market. 
  • Opendoor: On April 18, 2023, Opendoor laid off 22% of its workforce. In total, the company cut 560 positions, mostly focused on operations roles. 
  • F5: On April 19, 2023, software firm F5 announced it was reducing its workforce by 9%. This downsizing plan affected 623 employees. 
  • Lyft: On April 21, 2023, Lyft confirmed it would lay off 1,072 employees, roughly 26% of its corporate workforce. The plan is to streamline operations and get back to “better meeting the needs of riders and drivers”. 
  • Red Hat: On April 24, 2023, Red Hat announced layoffs for 4% of its global workforce, impacting about 760 workers. 
  • Flink: On April 24, 2023, the Berlin-based company announced plans to lay off 8,000 employees, which accounts for 40% of its workforce. Due to difficult market conditions, the company needs to revise its cost structures and focus primarily on profitability. 
  • Dropbox: On April 27, 2023, Dropbox announced the reduction of its global workforce by about 16%, impacting 500 employees. Some of the more significant cuts were made to free up investment in future growth of the company.

  • Thoughtworks: On March 1, 2023, the software consultancy firm laid off about 4% of its global workforce, impacting roughly 500 employees. This reduction was made to support the future growth of the business. 
  • SiriusXM: On March 6, 2023, SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz announced an elimination of 475 jobs, or about 8% of its headcount. This was due to economic uncertainty and a need to operate with “greater agility and efficiency”. 
  • Xero: On March 9, 2023, Xero announced that it would be laying off 700-800 jobs across its business as part of the company’s plan to streamline its operations, realign the business, and provide a better balance of growth and profitability. 
  • GoTo Group: On March 10, 2023, the Indonesia tech firm announced the decision to cut 600 more jobs, following 1,300 jobs that were cut late last year. The layoffs aimed at streamlining the organization and boosting the company’s profitability. 
  • Meta: On March 14, 2023, Meta reduced its team size by 10,000 people, while also closing 5,000 open roles. This was done to help the company improve financial performance to execute their long term vision. 
  • Amazon: On March 20, 2023, Amazon announced another round of layoffs, cutting 9,000 more workers. This latest round of layoffs was expected to impact Amazon’s cloud computing, advertising, human resources, and Twitch units. 
  • Just Eat: On March 21, 2023, Just Eat laid off 1,700 delivery drivers as the food delivery business deals with a slowdown in demand. According to reports in the Telegraph, 170 operations staff were also impacted by the decision. 
  • Indeed: On March 22, 2023, Indeed CEO Chris Hyams announced a reduction of approximately 15% of its team, impacting roughly 2,200 people. The cuts came from nearly every Indeed team, function, level, and region at Indeed and Indeed Flex. 
  • Lucid Motors: On March 28, 2023, the U.S. automaker announced cutting its workforce by 18%, impacting around 1,300 employees, as part of a restructuring.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, total nonfarm payroll increased by 517,000 in the month of January 2023, the most in six months.   • Amdocs: On January 2, 2023, despite coming off an excellent year, Amdoc decided to cut its workforce by 3%. This impacts 700 employees, including 100 in Israel. This workforce reduction was an action taken to maximize the company’s flexibility and efficiency. 
  • Vimeo: On January 4, 2023, Vimeo’s CEO, Anjali Sud, sent an email to the Vimeo team informing them of layoffs. The team was reduced by 11% in structural areas of product and business and across the company to streamline team sizes. Vimeo’s goal is to be a more focused and successful company. 
  • Salesforce: On January 4, 2023, Salesforce announced plans to layoff about 10% of its workforce, impacting 8,000 employees. The reduction is a result of hiring too many people leading into facing an economic downturn.

  • Coinbase: On January 10, 2023, Coinbase announced a second round of layoffs after laying off 18% of its workforce in June 2022. This round will impact nearly a fifth of the company’s workforce, or 950 jobs, due to recent pressure on the crypto sector. 
  • Flexport: On January 11, 2023, Flexport announced layoffs for 20% of its global workforce, impacting roughly 640 employees. 
  • Microsoft: On January 18, 2023, Microsoft announced layoffs of roughly 5% of its workforce, impacting nearly 10,000 employees. The CEO stated the cuts come “in response to macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities”. 
  • Google: On January 20, 2023, Google employees received an email from the CEO informing them of layoffs affecting approximately 12,000 roles. The roles were cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions. 
  • Spotify: On January 23, 2023, Spotify decided to trim 6% of its workforce, roughly 600 jobs.  
  • IBM: On January 25, 2023, IBM CEO announced cuts of about 1.5% of the company's workforce, impacting about 3,900 workers.

  • Kraken: On November 30, 2022, Kraken announced the decision to reduce its global workforce. This impacts approximately 1,100 people and about 30% of the workforce. This decision was made in order to adapt to current market conditions. 
  • Infarm: On November 28, 2022, Infarm employees received an email detailing layoffs. A production site reduction of 50% of the workforce, impacting around 500 employees, is the result of a significant strategy shift. The focus will shift towards Growing Centres where there is a clear path to profitability. 
  • Carvana: On November 18, 2022, Carvana CEO Ernie Garcia announced a layoff impacting around 1,500 people, or 8% of its workforce, citing the reason as economic headwinds and delayed car purchasing. The layoffs mainly impact employees in Carvana’s corporate and tech departments, as well as some operational positions. 
  • Roku: On November 17, 2022, the company announced the cut of 7% of its overall workforce, eliminating 200 jobs, citing current economic conditions as the cause for this reduction. 
  • Amazon: On November 16, 2022, Amazon cut approximately 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles. The cuts would primarily impact Amazon’s devices organization, retail division, and human resources. 
  • Meta: On November 9, 2022, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced layoffs in a letter to employees. This reduction was for 13% of the overall staff, impacting more than 11,000 employees. Zuckerberg noted that the company was taking steps to become a leaner and more efficient company cutting discretionary spending and extending the hiring freeze. 
  • Salesforce: On November 8, 2022, Salesforce confirmed that nearly 1,000 employees were cut after seeing demand lighten.

Payroll for the month of October surpassed economists’ expectations of 193,000. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment increased by 261,000 in October 2022. The unemployment rate rose above pre-pandemic levels again to 3.7%. Monthly job growth has averaged 407,000 this far in 2022, compared with 562,000 per month in 2021.

  • GoFundMe: On October 26, 2022, GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan informed the company of layoffs. This impacted approximately 12% of the workforce, reducing the company numbers by 94 employees. This restructuring occurred due to substantial business changes in the last year due to reduced budgets and increased inflation. 
  • Fundbox: On October 25, 2022, Fundbox CEO Prashant Fuloria announced that the company has laid off about 40% of its workforce, impacting 150 of its 360 employees. Fuloria attributes this reduction to growing the team too quickly, but claims it was a necessary step to strengthen business fundamentals. 
  • Cerebral: On October 24, 2022, telehealth unicorn Cerebral laid off 20% of its workforce. The company cited the reason for layoffs as an ongoing push for operational efficiencies while prioritizing clinical and safety across the organization, which impacted around 400 employees. Those that lost their job are primarily clinical staff and care counselors. 
  • Clear Capital: On October 14, 2022, Clear Capital laid off 27% of its staff, impacting approximately 378 employees. This came just months after freezing mass hiring, and the reduction primarily impacted the organization’s operational team. 
  • FrontRow: On October 12, 2022, the edtech startup FrontRow announced layoffs of 75% of its workforce, impacting around 130 people and reducing the total number of company employees to 40 people. This follows a 30% workforce reduction in May.

  • Twilio: On September 14, 2022, Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson sent a letter to employees announcing the company’s decision for layoffs. In order to run more efficiently and align the company’s investments with its priorities, the job cuts affected 11% of its workforce.  
  • Patreon: On September 13, 2022, CEO Jack Conte wrote a letter to the staff notifying them of a 17% staff reduction. This affects 80 employees across the Go-to-Market, Operations, Finance, and People teams. 
  • Peloton: On October 6, 2022, Peloton Interactive announced its fourth round of layoffs, this time affecting about 500 employees, or 12% of its workforce. Current CEO Barry McCarthy stated that the company has to prove it is viable and can stand on its own.

The labor market continues to recover from the job losses of the pandemic-induced recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment increased by 315,000 in August 2022. This growth brings total nonfarm employment 240,000 higher than pre-pandemic levels. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2% from July, reaching a rate of 3.7%. 

While we still saw notable hires in August, the job growth cooled in comparison to July. This is due to the fear of rising interest rates and talk of a recession.

  • 2U: On August 30, 2022, Chip Paucek, Co-Founder and CEO of 2U, shared the news to strategically transform the business to one unified brand, edX. These changes resulted in a loss of 20% of the workforce. This round of layoffs is a response to the merger with edX last year and enrollment declines.
  • Innovaccer: On September 1, 2022, a layoff of 120 employees occurred at the healthtech company Innovaccer. The impacted employees are mostly from the tech team and include team managers and team leads. These layoffs are attributed to the current economic conditions. All laid off employees are being offered three-months salary as a severance package. 
  • Wayfair: On August 19, 2022, Wayfair announced layoffs of about 5% of its global workforce, impacting about 870 employees. The job cuts are part of the company’s plan to manage operating expenses and realign investment priorities. Corporate roles in North America and Europe were primarily affected. 
  • Argyle: On August 26, 2022, a spokesperson for the fintech company Argyle confirmed the workforce reduction of 6.5% of the team, impacting 20 people. These layoffs happened across all departments. 
  • GoodRx: On August 31, 2022, GoodRx said its board approved layoffs of 140 employees, accounting for around 16% of the company’s workforce. The job cuts are mostly in the technology-focused and marketing areas. The layoffs are a result of GoodRx trying to re-balance the company.

As rumblings of a recession continue, the U.S. labor market continued to hold strong in July 2022. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment rose by 528,000 last month, greatly exceeding the 250k estimate. The unemployment rate for July, at 3.5%, returned to pre-pandemic levels. 

Despite the gains in employment, worker demand remains high. The number of job openings continues to exceed the number of unemployed workers actively seeking employment. Competition for workers remains stiff. Potential remains for aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. Eyes and ears remain open as talk of recession continues.

  • Rivian: On July 27, 2022, the electric automaker startup laid off about 6% of its workforce, impacting nearly 840 workers. Concerns of rising interest rates, inflation, and increased commodity prices are noted as the cause.

There've been rumblings in recent months of a recession—but the U.S labor market remained strong in June 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 372,000 jobs added last month, while the unemployment rate held steady at 3.6%—a level that's stayed consistent for four consecutive months.

Despite the current strong market, high inflation and rising interest rates are contributing to the cooling of the economy and causing fear of a recession—but the biggest impediment to the job market is the availability of workers. Despite the gains in employment, there are still 524,000 fewer jobs than there were in February 2020, before the COVID-19 crisis hit. This creates a tight labor market, with the number of job openings exceeding the number of workers actively seeking jobs.

There've been lots of posts lately on LinkedIn about layoffs—particularly at tech companies. But although the job market is tightening a bit, it isn't all doom and gloom. Here are 3 key industries that led hiring gains in June: 

Healthcare:

Healthcare occupations are projected to be one of the leading industries in hiring. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services.   • Twitter: On July 7, 2022, Twitter announced layoffs of 30% of the talent acquisition team. The company is also currently under a hiring freeze.
  • Gopuff: On July 12, 2022, Gopuff is cutting 10% of its global workforce, impacting 1,500 employees. This delivery startup will also be closing 76 U.S warehouses, about 12% of its networks.
  • Hopin: On July 11, 2022, pandemic-fueled layoffs occurred at Hopin, a London-based virtual events platform. Following the 138 employees laid off four months ago, Hopin announced another round of layoffs. This resulted in a loss of 242 employees, 29% of the company’s workforce.
  • Next Insurance: On July 8, 2022, Next Insurance announced a 17% cut of its workforce, impacting roughly 150 employees in the U.S and Israel. Worsening economic conditions, a shift toward prioritizing profitability, and cost management were driving factors in the reduction of the insurtech’s team.
  • Redfin: On June 14, 2022, Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman announced a round of layoffs. With May demand 17% below expectations, 8% of Redfin employees were let go.
  • LoanDepot: On July 14, 2022, LoanDepot announced more layoffs for 2022. In the first half of the year, the mortgage company already cut 2,800 jobs. There are plans to lay off another 2,000 employees by the end of 2022.

  • Healthcare: rose by 57,000 (hiring for registered nurses, licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses, physical therapists, critical care nurses, medical and clinical laboratory technicians, and acute care nurses.  
  • Transportation & warehousing: added 36,000 jobs (hiring for air, rail, water, and truck transportation and warehousing and storage)
  • Manufacturing: increased by 29,000 (hiring within the durable and non-durable goods, transportation equipment, food manufacturing, and machinery sectors)
  • Information: added 25,000 jobs (hiring in the publishing industry, motion picture and sound recording industries, and data processing, hosting and related services)
  • Social assistance: rose by 21,000 (hiring in individual and family services, emergency and other relief services, and child day care services)
  • Wholesale trade: added 16,000 jobs (hiring within the durable and non-durable goods industries, electronic markets, agents, and brokers)
  • Mining: employment rose by 5,000 (hiring in oil and gas extraction, coal and metal ore mining, and support activities for mining)
