For example, if you are a freelance writer searching for clients, add keywords that will help your clients look for you. Review different job descriptions for positions you would be suitable for and select relevant keywords from them. Keywords in your headline that indicate your area of expertise increase your chances of being found. 

When recruiters search LinkedIn for relevant candidates, they enter job titles and other related terms into the search engine.  Keywords closer to these titles have a higher chance of getting noticed.

2. Choose an Impactful Profile Headline

In the detailed 2,000-character description, you can break your content into the following:

  • Call to action
  • Your contact information

3. Background and Experience  

This section is the second most important one once you have successfully grasped the attention of your potential recruiter. In this category, you have to boast about your success and experiences. 

Most people restrict this section to basic education and work experience; they consider volunteer roles and certifications unnecessary. This is not recommended. Make this section of your profile comprehensive, summarize all your achievements, and include all the experiences that have made you grow both in your professional and personal capacity.

If you are currently employed, keep your description detailed and updated. Recruiters are most interested in your current role. If you are a fresh graduate, state all your project works, volunteer work, and internships.

Make sure to include metrics in your descriptions for each role. Try this simple formula for success when writing about your achievements for each role: success verb + noun + metric + outcome

4. Endorsements and Skills

The next step is talking about the skills you have mastered. State all the skills, even the ones outside your professional practices. Have your connections and previous employers endorse you for those skills.

Add all the relevant certifications you have earned. This makes you more visible as hiring managers may search for candidates with certain certifications and skills. It also helps increase LinkedIn ranking. If you are associated with any non-profit programs, be sure to include these under volunteer experience.

5. Post and Share Relevant Content

Most LinkedIn users believe that their LinkedIn profile is not to be used as a social sharing platform. In most cases, your profile may not influence your appearance, but what you post increases your chances of being noticed online. 

Optimizing your profile to grow your professional visibility can help bring recruiters and hiring managers to you. But, the kind of content you share matters: make sure to only search and share content that resonates with your profession. The LinkedIn analytic tool can give you insights on:

  • What content is the most relevant for you
  • The comments, impressions, shares, and views across your articles and posts.

6. Customize Your Profile URL

There are millions of profiles on LinkedIn and, naturally, several other people who have the same profession as well as your first name. To make it easier to be found, customize your profile URL with your last name and possibly some other words related to your industry. For SEO optimization, it is ideal to have your first or last name included in the customized URL.

If you are not familiar with the settings, simply go to your profile settings and select “Edit public profile and URL.” Here you can change your profile URL to something personal and cleaner that makes it easy to find you.

To praise or recognize the services of others, LinkedIn members write recommendations for businesses, employees, or colleagues. People who visit your profile look for recommendations to make an informed decision about you. 

It is suggested that you approach your company, supervisor, or co-worker to endorse you with a well-written recommendation. This will help build your potential client’s confidence in you. Even better, write recommendations for people in your network. More often than not, they will return the favor and write you one as well.

  • Use hashtags to increase exposure of your content and more visible among people with similar goals and interests.
  • Join groups where people with the same interests and fields share insights, news, and post about new job listings.
