About The Position
This role supports fish stock assessments by collecting and organizing spawning ground data in the Skagit River Basin. The Spawner Survey Technician will conduct fieldwork including spawning ground surveys, biological sampling, and juvenile salmonid stock surveys. Responsibilities include compiling and summarizing data, safely operating small watercraft, vehicles, and other equipment, and maintaining positive working relationships with stakeholders and Co-Managers.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
- Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
- College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.
- Valid driver’s license.

- Independently launching and operating a cataraft (pontoon boat) in rivers.
- Loading, unloading, portaging, and navigating a pontoon raft.
- Identifying salmonids in the field.
- Filling out field data forms using electronic and paper methods.
- Using basic field sampling techniques and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Conduct stock assessment surveys and biological sampling of anadromous species throughout District 14 (Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties).
- Hike or boat (via pontoon or jet sled) sections of the Skagit basin and independent tributaries.
- Record and enumerate observations of salmon redds, salmon species, and survey conditions.
- Collect biological samples from fish carcasses.
- Accurately record data collected during surveys using paper and electronic methods.
- Review, record, and tabulate data.
- Edit and enter data from field surveys and biological data collection.
- Organize and archive raw data.
- Accurately collect and record basic resource and fishery information into electronic or written form.
