About The Position
Xcel Energy is hiring a Journeyman Substation Electrician to build, repair, maintain, and operate high-voltage substations so safe, reliable, and cost-effective power is available to customers. The position involves installing, constructing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a range of substation electrical equipment, and developing proficiency with Xcel Energy equipment for safe operation and switching. The electrician is responsible for obtaining and verifying clearances and must be able to switch 345 kV, 230 kV, 115 kV, and distribution high voltages. A working knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures is expected. The role also takes a lead in learning, implementing, and demonstrating safety practices consistent with Xcel Energy guidelines. Work may take place in varied weather, at heights, and in confined spaces. The employee must respond to after-hours and weekend call-outs and travel extensively for extended periods. Applicants must live within 40 miles and 40 minutes of the Rush Creek O&M building. The starting rate is $63.55 per hour. Selection includes an interview and pre-employment written and hands-on tests at a company training facility.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Journeyman-level Substation Electrician who has completed an approved Substation Apprentice program or company-approved equivalent.
- Experience operating and maintaining high-voltage electrical substations.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within six months.
- Basic knowledge of the National Electric Code, FERC, Hazmat, and OSHA regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to use assorted hand and power tools and electrical diagnostic equipment.
- Basic computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to respond to after-hours and weekend call-outs and travel extensively for extended periods.
- Must live within 40 miles and 40 minutes of the Rush Creek O&M building.
- Must be self-motivated, work well on a team, and have a positive attitude.
Responsibilities
- Install, construct, inspect, repair, and maintain substation electrical equipment, including high-voltage transformers, power circuit breakers, instrument transformers, structures, conductors, conduits, switches, regulators, generators, motors, pumps, controls, and wiring.
- Develop and demonstrate proficiency with Xcel Energy high-voltage electrical equipment for safe operation and switching.
- Obtain and verify proper clearances.
- Switch 345 kV, 230 kV, 115 kV, and distribution high voltages.
- Apply lockout/tagout policies and procedures.
- Learn, implement, and demonstrate safety practices and procedures consistent with Xcel Energy guidelines.
- Respond to after-hours and weekend call-outs.
- Travel extensively for extended periods.
