Duke Raleigh Hospital, a Campus of Duke University Hospital, is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is the third largest of the four Duke Health hospitals with 204-beds and offers a comprehensive array of services, including cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal, and wound healing care. The Medical/Surgical Stepdown Unit at the Duke Raleigh Campus is a 45-bed unit that serves patients with a wide range of diagnoses including sepsis, pneumonia, diabetes, sickle cell, gastrointestinal complications, mental health disorders, and stepdown level of care patients (cardiac drips, post cath lab recovery, peritoneal dialysis, and more). The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and performs work as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. This individual is expected to perform basic care and comfort standards, have knowledge of patient population needs, and assist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. The NA is expected to practice medical asepsis, respect patient dignity, privacy, and cultural differences, adhere to policies and procedures, and respond appropriately during emergencies. They maintain the patient/family environment, perform general unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment and supplies, use accurate verbal and written communication, and document patient care in the electronic health record. They also perform clerical duties involved in preparing, maintaining, and processing patient, unit(s), and hospital data and records, including operating patient care information systems. Individuals in this role are typically scheduled for NCA I shifts at minimum 25% of the time.
