The Behavioral Health Counselor requires a broad, yet solid, understanding of human behavior and theories of counseling. This role may involve working with a wide range of patient populations and presenting issues, necessitating a foundation in various treatment modalities. It is a team-based role where responsibility for patient well-being is shared among the treatment team, with overall responsibility resting with a clinical supervisor or admitting provider. The counselor assesses patient needs, may diagnose disorders, develops and implements treatment plans specific to patient needs, and continually assesses patient progress, revising plans accordingly. Responsibilities also include documenting treatment sessions, providing patient progress updates to the interdisciplinary team, educating patient support members about issues and interventions, and making referrals for additional clinical services or specialists as needed. The counselor must stay current on emerging issues in the profession. In a clinic setting (other than primary care), the Behavioral Health Counselor conducts scheduled face-to-face counseling sessions aimed at assessing and improving patients' emotional, mental, and behavioral health.
