About The Position

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field.
• Knowledge of fish capture techniques, fish biology and life history, the scientific method, analytical thought, and applicable federal and state rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Ability to live, navigate, camp, and work in remote wilderness environments for extended periods, including trips of up to three weeks.
• Ability to operate motorized vehicles and watercraft and non-motorized watercraft.
• Skill in handling, tagging, and measuring aquatic wildlife species.
• Knowledge of first aid and survival techniques.
• Ability to use field and office equipment, including radios, compasses, GPS units, orthophotos, trailers, all-terrain vehicles, and four-wheel-drive trucks.
• Computer skills with programs such as Word, Excel, Access, Google tools, GIS, R, and SQL.
• Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
• Successful completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination, subject to reasonable accommodation.
• Successful completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

• Experience monitoring fish on large rivers in remote areas for extended periods, particularly within the Grand Canyon.
• Ability to follow policies, standardized protocols, and oral and written directions from supervisors.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a research team, including in a crew leadership role.
• Ability to learn specialized sampling equipment and data-gathering techniques, problem-solve, and contribute to project design and implementation.
• Ability to think and work independently and lead extended fish monitoring trips.
• Availability to work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and nights, in extreme and remote environments for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fish monitoring using electrofishing, hoop netting, angling, creel surveys, and other sampling techniques.
• Lead field crews and train volunteers and others in sampling protocols and methods during monitoring trips.
• Enter, correct, and maintain data from monitoring and research projects, including angler surveys, fish monitoring trips, and historical data.
• Maintain and prepare field equipment, including PIT tag scanners, electrofishing equipment, nets, and other instrumentation.
• Conduct data summaries and statistical analyses using software such as Excel, Access, R, and SQLite.
• Contribute to trip reports, annual reports, and scientific manuscripts.
• Give oral presentations to the public and scientific audiences at conferences and meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
