About The Position

Requirements

• Have a high school diploma or equivalent GED on or before the internship start date.
• Be at least 18 years old on or before the internship start date.
• Have been accepted into a civil engineering or land surveying program with an anticipated start date in the following fall semester.
• Possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in Minnesota.
• Successfully complete a background check and driver's license verification.
• Have basic knowledge of, or the ability to learn, laws, rules, and regulations relating to highway construction.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing and demonstrate positive public relations skills.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships and handle a variety of tasks under moderate supervision and standard operating procedures.
• Perform tasks requiring basic analytical skills and travel within the daily work assignment and within Minnesota, including extended overnight stays.
• Work extended, evening, and weekend hours as needed; attend regularly scheduled work hours and additional hours as necessary.
• Comply with organizational and departmental policies and data practices requirements for private data.
• Meet the physical and mental demands of the work environment, including fieldwork involving bending, climbing, walking on uneven terrain, and pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying up to 50 pounds as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, developing, and implementing highway design and construction projects.
• Assist with staking, surveying, drafting, and design work to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
• Assist with inspecting and documenting construction activities, quantities, and material quality.
• Assist with compliance testing for soils, aggregates, bituminous, concrete, and other construction materials.
• Monitor and inspect project progress and construction methods to help ensure specifications and applicable guidelines, standards, and laws are followed.
• Assist Public Works/Highway maintenance staff with entry-level tasks such as mowing, trimming weeds, shoveling, raking, patching potholes, and washing equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
