About The Position

This job is located in the Current Planning and Urban Design Division of the Planning Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The Zoning Compliance Officer is responsible for conducting special zoning inspections within the City’s historic and design districts and City-wide inspections of landscaping regulations; ensuring compliance with City codes and ordinances; and administering, supporting and tracking enforcement processes.

Requirements

• Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher in regional and city planning, urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, or a related field; and a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in urban planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, construction inspections, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
• Possession of a valid Oklahoma Code Enforcement Certification.
• Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
• Knowledge of federal, state, and City regulations governing zoning codes.
• Knowledge of and skill in interpreting City zoning codes and ordinances.
• Knowledge of and skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, maps, and plans, including elevation drawings, product and material specifications, renderings, and other documentation used in design review.
• Knowledge of and skill in following established safety procedures, practices, and regulations.
• Skill in oral and written communication using tact and diplomacy.
• Skill in compiling, organizing, and maintaining accurate and legible records, including photographing buildings and sites and maintaining organized files and documentation.
• Skill in performing basic arithmetic calculations, including property and square footage calculations.
• Skill in identifying basic building and structural components.
• Ability to read, interpret, explain, enforce, and apply municipal codes, City ordinances, state statutes, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to conduct inspections to determine compliance with City codes and ordinances.
• Ability to use assigned electronic devices to conduct research, utilize relevant software applications, and create reports and files containing text and images.
• Ability to plan and prioritize work assignments.
• Ability and willingness to work effectively with others.
• Ability and willingness to make decisions and assume responsibility for work performed.

Nice To Haves

• Experience interpreting zoning codes, ordinances, and/or design guidelines.
• Experience using Accela, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Experience in customer service or client-facing roles.
• Experience in managing projects independently and without close supervision.

Responsibilities

• Interpreting and enforcing zoning and landscape regulations within the corporate City limits.
• Assisting the public and applicants by providing technical information regarding City codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Coordinating with Development Services zoning and code enforcement staff.
• Operating a City vehicle to travel to and from inspection sites and other locations as required to perform assigned duties.
• Conducting zoning inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
• Conducting specialized inspections within the City's historic and design districts.
• Conducting inspections related to landscaping regulations.
• Issuing notices of violation or citations for noncompliance with zoning regulations.
• Supporting, administering, and tracking enforcement actions and processes related to established codes and ordinances, including testifying in court.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
