About The Position

The City of Milton Youth Summer Internship Program is a four-week paid internship designed to provide high school students with hands-on experience in local government. Interns will rotate through various City departments and gain exposure to public service operations, workplace expectations, and community engagement. Interns will participate in a structured round robin schedule rotating through multiple City departments, which may include Administration, Finance, Police Department, Fire Department, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Planning and Code Enforcement, and Special Events and Media. Interns may also attend City meetings, assist with special events, and participate in department shadowing opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school student, recommended grades 10 through 12
  • Demonstrated interest in public service, leadership, or community involvement preferred
  • Must demonstrate willingness to directions and work in a structured environment
  • Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and a willingness to learn
  • Ability to interact respectfully with staff, peers, and the public
  • Must comply with all applicable Florida child labor laws
  • Must have parent or guardian consent if under the age of 18
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be currently enrolled in high school, a high school equivalency program, or an approved homeschool program and reside in Santa Rosa County

Responsibilities

  • Observe and participate in daily operations across multiple City departments through a structured rotational schedule
  • Engage in job shadowing experiences to gain understanding of departmental functions, services, and responsibilities
  • Assist staff with basic tasks as appropriate to support learning and departmental activities
  • Actively participate in discussions, activities, and assignments to enhance learning and exposure to public service
  • Attend scheduled meetings, training, and City events with attentiveness and professionalism
  • Demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn about local government operations
  • Maintain professionalism in behavior, communication, and appearance at all times
  • Follow all City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Demonstrate reliability and punctuality in attendance and participation
  • Complete assigned tasks accurately and on time while seeking guidance and feedback as needed
  • Participate in special projects, events, or program activities as assigned
  • Assist with setup, breakdown, or support of City events and community programs
  • Provide general support to staff during departmental needs as appropriate to learning level
  • Attending field visits or site tours as part of departmental rotations
  • Perform other related duties consistent with a learning-focused internship program as assigned

  • This position is designated as an intern position. Positions in these classifications are not eligible for City benefits and do not receive paid time off, paid holidays, health insurance, pension or retirement benefits, or any other employee benefits offered to full-time positions.
