About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Youth Sports & Camp, the Youth Sports & Camp Coordinator is responsible for the supervision, operation, development, and implementation of dynamic out of school time sports and camp programs for youths at the Presidio YMCA. This includes the delivery and development of school-year programs including Youth Basketball Leagues, sports clinics, new Youth Sports programming as identified by community needs, and supervision of the Youth Sports Staff; as well as creating a positive and nurturing environment for youth taking part in the sports and skill-building physical activity programs through the Presidio YMCA summer day camp. Highly collaborative, the Youth Sports & Camp Coordinator builds and maintains strong and productive relationships with and among youth, families, YMCA staff, and partner organizations. They create a strong foundation for a lifelong relationship with healthy living using the YMCA’s youth development model. The Youth Sports & Camp Coordinator should be adept at working in a fast-paced environment and thinking fast on their feet. They are expected to be a positive role model for youth and staff, build healthy relationships, be attentive to the safety of program participants and staff, communicate effectively with participants and their parents, support staff, and align the program with the YMCA’s three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Requirements

  • 21 years or older
  • High School Diploma
  • 2+ year experience working with youth in an organized setting
  • 1+ year previous supervision experience
  • A commitment to providing young people with the highest-quality youth development experience
  • Knowledgeable about youth development program design and planning, administration and evaluation, child abuse reporting laws, as well as knowledge and awareness of a wide variety of out of school activities.
  • Must be a talented multi-tasker and an independent worker who is adept at working on a team, thrives in a start-up environment and maintains a flexible and positive attitude
  • Experience working with elementary aged youth in sports and/or recreational settings
  • Excellent organizational skills and multi-project/multi-task oriented, including experience scheduling and coordinating multiple fun and education-focused activities for youth.
  • A team player with proven ability to work with people from a variety of different ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, sexual and generational backgrounds.
  • Fingerprint background check clearance
  • Current YMCA approved CPR and First Aid certification (can complete upon hire)

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of organized youth sports coaching experience
  • 3+ years or more working with youth in an organized setting and 2+ years of proven staff development, supervision and training
  • A commitment to providing young people with the highest quality youth development experience.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Tagalog
  • Experience with restorative practices and de-escalation strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a goal-driven work plan and annual action plan with program activities and deadlines.
  • Plan and implement summer day camp programming, including structured activities, snack and lunch times, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Organize and lead after-school youth sports and camp programs.
  • Ensure program environments are welcoming, accessible, and inclusive.
  • Identify and remove barriers to participation.
  • Assist with hiring, supervising, and training youth sports and camp staff and volunteers.
  • Engage and support volunteers.
  • Coordinate staffing for programs and provide direct service as needed.
  • Provide ongoing training and support for program staff, including holding regular staff meetings, developing and implementing training sessions, observing staff during activities, offering feedback and guidance, ensuring completion of required training, and conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Recruit and retain youth participants through outreach efforts, including creating and distributing promotional materials, building relationships with families and community leaders, collecting and organizing registration paperwork, and maintaining participant records in the database.
  • Develop partnerships with schools, administrators, counselors, teachers, and community organizations.
  • Monitor participants and provide behavioral support using proactive strategies.
  • Facilitate restorative practices and de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Ensure equipment and supplies are available, safe, and appropriate for participants.
  • Maintain high standards of leadership, enthusiasm, creativity, and respect for participants, families, and staff.
  • Complete administrative tasks related to program operations.
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers as needed, ensuring prompt responses to inquiries.
  • Address concerns or complaints and escalate issues to supervisors when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, supervision, risk management, and mandatory reporting policies.
  • Attend required staff meetings and professional development training.
  • Complete all mandatory safety training and certifications before the first shift.
  • Maintain professional conduct and work ethic.
  • Follow hygiene and sanitation guidelines, including frequent handwashing.
  • Adhere to YMCA safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate YMCA leadership values, including mission advancement, relationship-building, operational effectiveness, and staff development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
