About The Position

This role is for a Youth Services Librarian at the Fruitville Library branch within Sarasota County Libraries. The primary focus is coordinating Youth Services programs and projects for youth ages 0-18, with a special emphasis on Children (Birth to 11), their families, and early literacy. Responsibilities also include providing customer service, acting as Person in Charge of the Facilities at times, and coordinating collections. The librarian will also engage in intergenerational programming with both youth and adults. As part of a team, employees will contribute to setting unit, library, and system goals, participate in decision-making, and evaluate progress. Librarians in this system are known for customer service, programming, outreach, collection development/maintenance, administration, and staff development. This position involves developing and implementing service standards, promoting library use through training, assisting customers with inquiries and Interlibrary Loan services, staying updated on library trends, aiding at service desks, representing the library in the community, preparing promotional materials, analyzing service population needs, networking with other agencies, and participating in goal setting and progress evaluation.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Science Professionals (CILIP) - OR - Bachelor’s degree and enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire
  • Subject to Passing Substance Screening
  • Fingerprint-based background check, as required by law

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience in a library environment.
  • Skill in using various electronic devices, including, but not limited to Kindle, Nook, tablets, and iPads and imparting this knowledge to customers of all ages.
  • Ability to train/coach patrons in the use of technology.
  • Experience working with youth (0-18 years of age), as well as their families

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers by locating answers to questions, including Interlibrary Loan services and referrals to agencies outside the library.
  • Keep abreast of developments, new trends, and innovations in libraries.
  • Aid at service desks and in other sections as needed.
  • Represent Sarasota County and the library/library interests to library users and within the community.
  • Prepare reviews, press releases, bibliographies, and other promotional displays.
  • Analyze and identify service population needs, developing and directing plans to meet those needs.
  • Network with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.
