About The Position

As part of the Information Services/Adult Services Department, and reporting to the Department Manager, this role provides responsive, high-quality services to adult patrons. Responsibilities include developing and delivering adult services and programming; assisting with collection development, including selection and weeding; creating engaging displays and exhibits; providing reference and information services; maintaining awareness of current professional practices; and performing related duties as assigned. The ideal candidate will bring a strong interest in adult nonfiction as well as reference and information services, along with the ability to connect patrons with relevant resources. They will be comfortable using current library technologies and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. This individual will demonstrate experience in planning and delivering adult programming, a proactive approach to outreach and community engagement, and strong communication skills. The position requires professionalism, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset, along with enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Prior professional experience with reference services and familiarity with research tools and content platforms (e.g., LibGuides) are preferred.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or from a New Jersey Master’s program in Library Science deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State University.
  • Valid certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience at the Librarian I level strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, or otherwise communicate in a second language (e.g., Spanish and/or South Asian languages).
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced urban environment.
  • Knowledge of current theories, principles, and practices of librarianship, with the ability to adapt to evolving technologies and service models.
  • Ability to design, develop, and deliver innovative programs and services, including the integration of new technologies into library services.
  • Prior professional experience with reference services and familiarity with research tools and content platforms (e.g., LibGuides) are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains communication with local community leaders and organizations; coordinates with the Outreach Branch to ensure alignment with system-wide initiatives.
  • Under supervision, plans, develops, implements, and evaluates programs, services, and activities to ensure alignment with library goals and responsiveness to community needs.
  • Designs, develops, and implements innovative programs and services, integrating new technologies to support information literacy and effective use of library resources.
  • Organizes and/or supports library tours, book talks, film programs, reading clubs, and related activities to promote literacy, encourage use of library resources, and inform the community about available services.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates displays and exhibits to enhance the library environment and highlight collections and services.
  • Supports Communications staff by contributing content that promotes library programs, services, and facilities.
  • Assists patrons in locating, evaluating, and effectively using information and resources; contributes to a welcoming environment that balances the needs of diverse patrons.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
