About The Position

This part-time position, supervised by the Youth Services Coordinator, involves maintaining high energy and enthusiasm while interacting with children, teenagers, and adult patrons. The role requires significant time on your feet conducting dynamic activities such as storytimes, games, science projects, and crafts. It demands enthusiasm and physical stamina in an active library environment. The position also involves providing courteous and respectful assistance to the public, performing duties requiring acute sensory awareness, creating a welcoming atmosphere, planning and delivering engaging library programs, handling program logistics, setting up and refreshing book displays, assisting with food-related events, tracking attendance statistics, setting up audio/visual technology, preparing program materials, maintaining the neatness of the Youth Services desk and displays, assisting with department improvement projects, participating in staff meetings and trainings, and maintaining confidentiality. The role requires excellent customer service and time management skills, and attendance is essential. Compliance with all relevant policies and procedures is crucial.

Requirements

  • Must enjoy working with toddlers, children, teens, and families.
  • Must be comfortable presenting in front of large audiences, speaking publicly, reading books aloud, and running crowd control for large groups of people in noisy environments.
  • Must learn responsibilities, procedures and policies primarily through oral instruction and observation that takes place on-the-job.
  • The ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions is essential.
  • Ability to plan and organize programming for multi-aged children, while working with parents, caregivers, and other adults present.
  • Ability to work with groups of multi-aged children with no adults present.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, patiently and effectively with the staff and the public on all age levels and cultural backgrounds in any situations.
  • Ability to communicate and follow instructions, both oral and written, and follow established routines.
  • Ability to learn and apply library procedures and policies.
  • Ability to learn and use library organization systems, technology, and resources.
  • Ability to train and work with possible and established volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and software, including Google Suite.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.
  • Ability to work independently, handling concurrent tasks, with minimal supervision after training, within the context of a team environment.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws.
  • Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to learn to operate tools and equipment listed.

Nice To Haves

  • Some artistic, theater, and/or public speaking experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Nintendo Switch, video games, Cricut, 3D Printing, or other technology is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides enthusiastic, courteous and respectful assistance to the public in person and over the phone.
  • Greets patrons, locates and provides information, instructs patrons in the use of library catalogs, assists with locating materials, refers inquiries to appropriate personnel, and promotes library programs.
  • Performs duties requiring acute sensory awareness, including the ability to clearly hear and respond to patron inquiries in both quiet and noisy environments.
  • Must possess sufficient visual acuity to read small text, such as the text on book spines.
  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere by actively interacting with patrons of all ages throughout each workday.
  • Plans, prepares, and delivers engaging library programs while contributing to the development of new offerings.
  • Handles all aspects of program logistics including gathering supplies, arranging furniture, setting up tables, and returning spaces to their original condition after events.
  • Plans, sets up and refreshes engaging book displays throughout the youth services department.
  • Requires the physical ability to transport numerous books at once and maneuver fully-loaded book carts across substantial distances within the library.
  • Assists in the setup, serving, and cleanup of food-related events.
  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere by actively interacting with patrons of all ages throughout each workday.
  • Collects and tracks program attendance statistics and other library statistics.
  • Sets up various audio/visual technology and equipment, ensuring smooth operation of library events and programs.
  • Prepares and organizes materials needed for programs such as books, craft materials, or supplies for activities.
  • Maintains the neat and orderly appearance of the Youth Services desk, displays, shared workspaces, and the library.
  • Assists in planning, executing, and closing projects to improve the youth services department.
  • Participates in and attends staff meetings, trainings, daily shows, programs, and other projects of the library as required and/or assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must be a team player with excellent customer service and time management skills.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Must be available to work varied work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Compliance with procedures, policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations of the Youth Services department, Farmington Public Library, and the City of Farmington is crucial.
