About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking a Youth Program Education Assistant I to serve as an Evening Teaching Assistant at Wright School in Durham, North Carolina. This role involves providing direct services, instructional support, and implementing a therapeutic behavior management system for children who may exhibit aggressive behaviors. Training encompasses child development, psychopathology, behavioral programming, role modeling, counseling, decision-making, crisis intervention, communication, daily living activities, maintaining a home-like environment, and generalizing skills learned in educational and treatment settings.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in human services or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; OR High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPR certification (as required by facility).
  • Listing as a Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (prior to providing direct patient care).
  • Pass pre-employment CPI Physical Requirements Testing and maintain all required training requirements.

  • Ability to establish rapport and respect without undue resort to physical control and authoritative attitude.
  • Ability to work and plan with clinical staff in assessing child behavior and planning and implementing treatment plans.
  • Physical ability to manage disruptive children and youth without harm to students or staff.
  • Experience in Re-education program.
  • Experience in behavioral management, preferably with children and youth with emotional disturbance or mental disability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to children.
  • Offer instructional support.
  • Implement a therapeutic behavior management system.
  • Provide consistent, safe, and therapeutic management of children with aggressive behaviors.
  • Engage in role modeling, counseling, and on-the-spot decision-making.
  • Conduct crisis intervention.
  • Model language and communication.
  • Assist with activities of daily living.
  • Maintain a home-like environment.
  • Generalize skills taught in education and treatment settings.
  • Work and plan with clinical staff in assessing child behavior and planning and implementing treatment plans.
  • Deliver treatment services using the Re-Education philosophy.
  • Participate in milieu team planning and delivery of treatment services including social skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, group problem solving, and individual and group behavior management programs.
  • Deliver treatment services to families through Liaison Teacher/Counselors, providing skill-based training on meeting children's special needs at home.
