About The Position

Under general direction of the Young Adult Librarian, the Young Adult Services Assistant supports welcoming, safe, and engaging library service for teens by assisting with daily activity in Teen Central, helping patrons access library materials and information, supporting teen programs and the Summer Library Challenge, and building positive relationships that encourage lifelong library use. The position also supports efficient library operations by assisting at service desks, cooperating with staff, and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma is required.
  • Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish-language speaking ability is preferred to support effective communication with Spanish-speaking patrons and families.
  • An associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with daily activity in Teen Central, primarily during afternoon and evening hours when teens are in the library.
  • Provides direct service to teens and other patrons, including checking out library materials, helping patrons locate information, and offering reading suggestions.
  • Monitors activity in Teen Central to support general safety, appropriate behavior, and a welcoming environment.
  • Builds positive relationships with teens to encourage library use, engagement, and lifelong connections to library services.
  • Engages teens through in-room activities, games, conversations, and informal interactions that support a positive teen services environment.
  • Assists with preparation and implementation of the Summer Library Challenge.
  • Supports teen programs and other library programs by helping with setup, activities, execution, and cleanup as assigned.
  • Assists at other service desks and with library activities as assigned to support daily operations.
  • Performs specific tasks, projects, and duties as assigned.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, the public, and especially teens.
  • Cooperates as a team member with other library staff to support efficient library operations and high-quality public service.
  • Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  • Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
  • All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.
