Hourly Student Employment - Writing Center Consultants

East Carolina University Portal•Greenville, NC

About The Position

The University Writing Center at East Carolina University is seeking undergraduate students to work 10–20 hours per week as writing consultants. Consultants support ECU students, faculty, staff, and community members with any type of writing at any stage of the writing process through individual consultations and material development. Consultations may take place in person or online through chats or paper uploads. The UWC uses a facilitative approach: writers retain control over the form and content of their work. Consultants guide writers on higher-order concerns such as assignment goals, focus, thesis development, organization, audience awareness, and content development. They also help writers learn to address sentence structure, style, word choice, and punctuation. In addition to consultations, consultants respond to emails, schedule appointments, promote the UWC, attend weekly seminars and a pre-semester orientation, and complete weekly professional development. During downtime, they work on projects that encourage reflection and further learning about writing center work. Writing center work and projects take precedence over coursework and personal work while consultants are working. Candidates must reside in North Carolina to qualify for a hybrid work assignment.
