About The Position

The Work Program Coordinator develops and oversees the in-house work program at St. John's, from job creation to application process to actual employment to post-employment. The Coordinator also works with community businesses and enterprises to secure off-grounds employment opportunities for our youth and to monitor their performance in those jobs, as appropriate. About St. John’s Founded in 1826 as a home for orphaned children, St. John’s has evolved into a nonprofit social services agency providing residential care to New York City youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. We offer holistic, trauma-informed support to young people up to age 21. Our main campus in Rockaway Park, Queens, houses a Residential Treatment Center, Close to Home Non-Secure Placement programs, administrative offices, clinical services, and an on-site NYC Department of Education school. We also operate a Non-Secure Detention residence in Richmond Hill and Limited Secure Placement programs in Brooklyn and Staten Island. St. John’s is dedicated to helping youth heal, grow, and build the skills they need to achieve their goals and return to family or a stable, supportive environment as engaged members of their communities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid NY State driver’s license.
  • Direct experience working with troubled youth.
  • Knowledge of employment, career exploration, and vocational training opportunities that support positive outcomes for youth.

Responsibilities

  • Working with Departmental leaders, identifies skill sets/qualifications and develops job specs/compensation recommendations and every in-house youth job. Establishes/over-sees the application process.
  • On the job safety concerns.
  • In conjunction with departmental supervisors, offers on-the-job guidance, direction and support for our in-house youth workforce.
  • Provides job readiness guidance and training for all RTC youth as well as future-oriented vocational guidance and support, in collaboration with teachers, permanency planners and Youth Counseling staff.
  • Serves as the agency's primary youth "Job Developer" (i.e., develops relationships with potential community-based employers to identify and match job opportunities with our youth, as appropriate).
  • Maintains job schedules for all youth workers. Keeps current on our youth's job performance (both in-house and off-grounds jobs).
  • Counsels and documents accordingly.
  • Develops and maintains an on-grounds vocational library.
  • Works to develop and maintain strong, caring, therapeutic relationships with all RTC youth.
  • Attends treatment meetings as required.
  • Assists in other Departmental program activities as assigned by supervisor.
