About The Position

Under the supervision of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Services Coordinator, this role plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates nutrition services at the Health Department, providing normal and therapeutic nutrition services for the WIC Program. The position also assists with WIC program quality assurance reviews for nutrition services. Key responsibilities include management and supervision of Nutritionists IIs and other Competent Professional Authorities (CPAs), providing nutrition oversight, program-level support, conducting reviews/audits, and performing quality assurance activities. The role involves communicating updated WIC policies, overseeing nutrition education materials, and providing consultation and technical assistance to healthcare teams and the community. Outreach activities to providers and the community are also a key function to increase WIC participation. The position is part of the multi-disciplinary WIC team, working collaboratively to enhance service integration and quality.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, public health, family and consumer sciences, health education or related degree with emphasis on nutrition.
  • Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
  • A bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor’s degree in any field and registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting.
  • Some positions require registration with the American Dietetics Association and a valid license from the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.
  • Ability to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.
  • If position requires a valid driver's license, a certified copy of a 10-year driving record will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates nutrition services at the Health Department.
  • Provides normal and therapeutic nutrition services for the WIC Program.
  • Assists with WIC program quality assurance reviews for nutrition services.
  • Recruits, hires, orients, trains, and supervises Nutritionists IIs and other Competent Professional Authorities (CPAs) providing WIC services.
  • Provides nutrition oversight, program-level support, management evaluation preparation, and conducts reviews/audits for other clinics.
  • Performs quality assurance activities such as staff observations, class reviews, and program audits.
  • Communicates updated WIC policies and procedures with Nutritionist IIs.
  • Oversees nutrition education materials.
  • Provides consultation and technical assistance to other members of the health care team and the community in areas related to normal nutrition, including health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Conducts outreach activities to providers and the community to assist with increasing WIC participation.
  • Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary WIC team in clinic, caseload monitoring and outreach.
  • Works with other program staff and disciplines to enhance integration and quality of service.
  • Completes WIC certifications and mid-certifications including health history, nutrition assessment, anthropometrics, immunization screening, hemoglobin or hematocrit testing, evaluation of risk status, prescription of WIC food package, documentation, and referrals.
  • Provides participants with information about the WIC program and how to redeem benefits.
  • Schedules upcoming WIC appointments.
  • Performs hemoglobin controls as needed.
  • Provides participant-centered nutrition education, counseling, and follow-up for participants.
  • Develops mutual nutrition and physical activity goals with clients.
  • Refers clients to web-based nutrition education.
  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates group nutrition education classes.
  • Documents nutrition education contacts.
  • Prescribes, updates, and explains food packages.
  • Tailors formula package for partially breastfeeding infants.
  • Documents changes to the WIC food package in SCWIC.
  • Issues benefits during certification, mid-certification, nutrition education encounters and as needed from SCWIC reports.
  • Approves List I Formulas.
  • Provides assistance to families with infants on contract and List I formulas including education, dispensing, and monitoring.
  • Refers participants on List II and metabolic formulas to the registered dietitian.
  • Pulls and completes reports in SCWIC.
  • Provides breastfeeding promotion and support to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Screens and refers pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants to the breastfeeding staff.
  • Issues and monitors breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies.
  • Updates professional skills and knowledge to assure delivery of quality nutrition services.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities.
  • Completes and maintains certification(s) required for the position.
  • Participates in continuing education, WIC trainings, region in-service programs, and agency required trainings.
  • Completes and maintains Certified Lactation Consultant credential if required.
  • Prepares and submits reports and documents as required.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Responds as directed during emergencies which may occur outside normal work hours.
  • Travels if requested.
