About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, is recruiting for multiple Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1/2/3 positions in Delta Junction, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants. Starting at the Flex 1 Level, you will be expected to develop a working knowledge of Fire Suppression and Fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology. WFR Tech 1 performs basic, well-defined tasks and assignments under specific instruction. As you progress to WFR Tech 2 and 3, you will gain more responsibilities and duties. The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection fosters a mission-driven culture with the responsibility for the protection of Alaska's values, including life and property, from wildland fire. The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection works closely with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies as well as private industry vendors to provide wildland fire management and protection for the State of Alaska.

Requirements

  • Must be eighteen years of age.
  • Six months of trainee or entry-level wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience (for WFR Tech 2).
  • Twelve months of wildland firefighting or forestry field experience, of which at least six months were at a developmental level (for WFR Tech 3).
  • Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
  • Possess an Alaska driver's license.
  • Master Record and/or Current Incident Qualification Card (Red Card) must be attached at the time of application.
  • Valid driver’s license required at the time of interview.
  • Last three evaluations and/or two professional references required at the time of interview.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level (complete a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less).
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed coursework from an accredited college or vocational-technical school in forestry, fire science, or a closely related field may substitute for six months of general field experience for WFR Tech 2 and 3.
  • Some positions may require a commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a working knowledge of Fire Suppression and Fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology.
  • Perform basic, well-defined tasks and assignments under specific instruction.
  • Gain more responsibilities and duties as progressing to WFR Tech 2 and 3.
  • Protect Alaska's values, including life and property, from wildland fire.
  • Work closely with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies as well as private industry vendors to provide wildland fire management and protection for the State of Alaska.
  • Think clearly, act decisively during prolonged and/or multiple incidents under stressful conditions when life and property are threatened.
  • Work up to sixteen hours per day for extended periods of time throughout the fire season.
  • Perform fire operations, wildland fire prevention, and aviation support.
  • Complete the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level.
  • Travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments.
  • Be available for assignments in and out of the area that requires absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days.
  • Fly in small fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters.
  • Handle hazardous materials.
  • Potentially require a commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements.
