Wet Collections Intern
About The Position
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is seeking a Wet Collections Intern for Summer 2026. This full-time, grant-funded contract position, supported by the Ontario Summer Employment Opportunities (SEO) Program, focuses on the care, preservation, and stewardship of the ROM’s extensive Insects & Invertebrates collections. The intern will support the maintenance of ethanol-preserved specimens, monitor specimen containers, identify preservation concerns, and assist with conservation-focused collection management activities. This role offers hands-on experience in museum collections care, natural history preservation, and conservation operations within a leading cultural institution, ideal for students or emerging professionals.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree specializing in Zoology, Biology, Museum Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous museum, collections, laboratory, or research experience, preferably involving biological specimens or wet collections.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to conduct careful, methodical work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate sound judgment in a collections-based environment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfort working with ethanol-preserved specimens and related chemicals while following established health and safety protocols.
- Ability to safely lift and move containers weighing up to 50 lbs. (22 kg) and climb ladders to access collection storage areas.
- Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy while performing detailed, repetitive tasks for extended periods.
Responsibilities
- Support the inventory management, inspection, and topping up of ethanol-preserved specimens, ensuring accuracy and compliance with collections management standards and fire code regulations.
- Identify and report preservation concerns, including evaporation, container deterioration, label degradation, or storage-related risks.
- Follow established museum protocols for specimen handling, storage, collections care, and chemical safety procedures related to wet collections.
- Assist with maintaining organized, safe, and accessible collection storage environments.
- Maintain accurate records, document progress, and support ongoing collections tracking and preservation initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Wet Collections Technician and Insects & Arachnids team to support departmental goals and project timelines.
