About The Position

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) is seeking a Graduate Intern to assist with digitization and processing projects within the Special Collections Department. This role involves developing archival skills, including digitization, processing archival materials, and creating metadata for historical photographs. The intern will contribute to making historical resources accessible to the community through an online archival database and potentially a brief article about the collection.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Public History or Library Science (archival focus preferred) from an accredited college or university.
  • Basic knowledge of archival best practices.
  • General knowledge of professional archival principles, methods, materials, and practices.
  • General knowledge of automated and computerized archives systems.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems with guidance.
  • Competence in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, corporate representatives, officials of other agencies.
  • Proficiency with current computer programs and internet.
  • Working knowledge of cursive handwriting and/or historical script.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in digitization projects preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Digitize a portion of the Photographs Collection, producing high-resolution scans.
  • Create metadata for historical photographs.
  • Organize and label digital files.
  • Produce a minimum of five digital photograph collections for the HMCPL Special Collections online archival database, including curated descriptions and history/biographical information.
  • Assist in processing and digitizing the entirety of the HMCPL Photographs Collection.
  • Enable researcher access to digitized photographs through online and onsite Special Collections platforms.
  • Prepare research for display, presentation, and/or future use by customers.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
