About The Position

The School of Social Work (SSW) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a Well-Being Coach for the Western North Carolina region to support the Public Service Leadership Program (PSLP). This grant-funded initiative aims to develop a statewide, three-tiered public service certificate for high school, community college/undergraduate, and master's level students, as well as in-service practitioners. The program's goal is to foster interest in public sector careers and provide credentials for career advancement and skill acquisition. The certificates will include tuition-free credentials, curriculum development, virtual delivery, and co-instruction by university faculty, agency professionals, and individuals with lived experience. The Well-Being Coach will be a key member of the PSLP Support Network, reporting to the Workforce Resilience Program Manager. This role will focus on recruiting and supporting PSLP participants and partner agencies across five critical service domains: Child and Family Services; Mental and Behavioral Health; Health, Aging and Caregiving; Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities; and Services to Justice-Involved Individuals. The coach will provide individualized and group coaching, resilience support through in-person and virtual sessions, workshops, and trainings focused on professional well-being, compassion satisfaction, and sustainable practice. Additional duties include assisting in curriculum development, creating training materials and online course content, supporting the Workforce Resilience study through participant outreach and data collection, contributing to the PSLP Workforce Resilience Digital Toolkit, engaging partners in well-being initiatives, and tracking participant engagement and program outcomes for reporting. This is a time-limited position for one year, with potential extension based on funding. The position is based in Western NC at Mars Hill University and will support social work education programs at Appalachian State University, Mars Hill University, Warren Wilson College, and Western Carolina University. The selected candidate must reside within a 30-45 minute commute of one of these campuses. The role requires up to 25% travel to in-state human services organizations and partner universities, and potentially to Chapel Hill, NC for meetings and conferences.

Requirements

  • Degree in social work, education, counseling, psychology, public health or other human services related field.
  • Experience in a well-being, coaching, clinical, or direct practice role within social work or human services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional well-being, resilience, and compassion satisfaction concepts.
  • Ability to manage workload independently and collaboratively without immediate or direct supervision.
  • Ability to think critically and use conflict resolution skills to solve complex logistical problems involving diverse populations.
  • Approachable, calm style that encourages open communication.
  • Proficiency with virtual delivery platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, BigBlueButton, Mentimeter).
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Working knowledge of NC social work education programs and areas of practice.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% in-state to human services organizations and partner universities, and potentially to Chapel Hill, NC.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in social work (MSW), education, counseling, psychology, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience working with human services practitioners in specific service domains (Child and Family Services; Mental and Behavioral Health; Health, Aging and Caregiving; Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities; Services to Justice-Involved Individuals).
  • Experience working with students pursuing degrees in helping professions.
  • Familiarity with implementation science frameworks and evidence-based well-being interventions.
  • Experience with program data collection, participant tracking, and evaluation reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized and group-based coaching and resilience support.
