About The Position

Under general supervision, is responsible for heating, cutting, and joining metal and fabricating parts and assisting in general mechanical maintenance work; performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience as a welder
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • A certificate of completion from a formal welding program may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required welder experience.

Responsibilities

  • Welds, cuts, grinds, shapes, or otherwise alters metal using a variety of tools and techniques for fabrication or repair purposes
  • Fuses metal parts together by means of one or more welding methods, such as an oxyacetylene torch metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), shield welding, and welding rods
  • Fabricates metal shapes or articles or to repair broken or cracked metal objects
  • Cuts metal using an oxyacetylene torch
  • Welds metal using an oxyacetylene torch and filler rod as needed to form the weld
  • Removes materials using methods such as arc gouging
  • Reads and interprets plans and sketches of work to be done
  • Estimates and plans for the materials and equipment required for each task
  • Draws and modifies diagrams as needed to repair and or fabricate parts or tools
  • Assists in dismantling, repairing, and assembling motors, compressors, conveyors, machinery, and related equipment
  • Utilizes computer software to complete work orders and time sheets
  • Organizes and tracks inventory at workshop
  • Lifts and/or maneuvers welding materials or other equipment for purposes of fabrication or repair which may include maneuvering sheet metal, a variety of steel or aluminum stock lengths, gas cylinders, or machinery attachments
  • Uses a plasma cutter to cut different types of metal
  • Uses electric hand tools
  • Performs low temperature silver soldering as needed to fuse particular metals
  • Applies flux to the molten area, preheating parts with torch, if necessary, before welding
  • May drive a truck with portable welding or fabricating equipment
  • May operate equipment such as backhoes, boats, commercial mowers, skid steer, or forklifts to position materials for repair
  • May supervise the activities of employees assigned as helpers
