About The Position

The Welder supports Cooper Steel of Virginia's goals, values, and philosophy by exhibiting excellence, quality service, commitment, and accountability. As a member of the Cooper Steel of Virginia’s team, performance includes demonstration of communication, teamwork, job knowledge and leadership. The Welder is responsible for understanding blueprints and welding techniques to execute the highest standards of welding performance.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as welder
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (flux-core, MIG weld)
  • Experience in using electrical or manual tools (grinder, squares, tape measure, hand tools)
  • Ability to read and interpret weld symbols
  • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face-shield, gloves etc.)
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to learn safe overhead crane operations

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Certification (e.g. an AWS welding certificate)
  • Prior experience using overhead cranes
  • Prior experience in a similar role
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work effectively with others.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints to identify weld symbols
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions.
  • Repair components by welding pieces and filling gaps
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws
  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
  • Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards
  • Keep work areas clean and organized
