About The Position

The Welder serves the parishes assigned to District 02 Operations’ Section, Gang 071, at the Bridge City Mechanic Shop. The position reports directly to the District 02 Mobile Equipment Shop Superintendent. The incumbent performs welding work and must have specialized knowledge and proficiency in operating and maintaining welding equipment. The position also requires safe operation of various mobile equipment, proper equipment servicing, and maintenance of service records.

The role may be filled by probation, promotion, or detail to special duty. It does not participate in a Career Progressive Group. Work hours may vary. No Civil Service test score is required for consideration.

Requirements

• Two years of experience or training in the welding trade, or completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or an equivalent program from another institution.
• Specialized knowledge and proficiency in operating and maintaining welding equipment.
• Ability to safely operate a variety of mobile equipment.

Responsibilities

• Measure, draw, or lay out materials such as iron, aluminum plates, and channel iron for cutting or welding.
• Grind and clean materials before or after welding to produce a finished-quality product.
• Braze, weld, fit, and/or install welded parts onto equipment or structures as necessary.
• Operate mobile equipment such as winch trucks, forklifts, and front-end loaders; may assist district mechanics.
• Complete daily work reports and related paperwork.
• Determine the equipment and supplies needed for each welding job.
• Ensure welding equipment is in safe working condition before use and that materials and equipment are used properly, safely, and efficiently.
• Design, fabricate, and/or braze items such as trash barrels, drainage covers, truck hardware, brackets, racks, and cages.
• Service equipment properly and maintain service records.
