Welder (HVAC Piping)

Modigent•Salt Lake, UT
•Onsite

About The Position

As a Welder (HVAC Piping), you will use specialized welding expertise to fabricate, assemble, install, and repair piping systems for commercial HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, and mechanical applications. You will primarily use TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and other alloys to produce precise, leak-free welds that meet applicable code and quality standards in construction environments. The position is primarily field-based at commercial and industrial construction sites, including indoor and outdoor locations, mechanical rooms, and rooftops. Work may involve varying weather, noise, dust, welding fumes, arc flash, heights, and confined-space hazards. Frequent regional travel is required; out-of-town projects, overtime, weekends, shift work, and occasional on-call availability may be needed as business requires. This is a safety-sensitive role requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements. Modigent describes a people-first culture and offers hands-on training, mentorship, certifications, and career advancement opportunities across its operating companies. The role has no supervisory responsibilities, though it may provide informal guidance to apprentices or junior welders and pipefitters.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of verifiable pipe-welding experience; HVAC, mechanical contracting, refrigeration, or industrial piping experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and other alloys.
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and P&IDs.
  • Precision welding and pipe-fitting skills, including multi-position work.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols and codes, including AWS D1.1 and ASME B31.5/B31.9, material properties, and preparation techniques such as purging and pre- and post-heating.
  • Safety awareness, attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork in fast-paced environments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs; work in confined spaces or at heights; bend, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, and use welding equipment and tools for extended periods. Frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina are also required.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and wear required PPE, including welding helmets, gloves, respirators as needed, flame-resistant clothing, and steel-toed boots.
  • Availability for frequent regional travel and occasional on-call work as business needs dictate.

  • Perform multi-position TIG (GTAW) and Stick (SMAW) welding on applicable materials and applications.
  • Read and execute work from blueprints, isometric drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Measure, cut, bevel, thread, groove, and prepare pipe ends and fittings using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain welding equipment; perform pre- and post-weld preparation, including inert-gas purging where needed.
  • Inspect materials for defects and accurately fit and tack components to ensure alignment and proper joint preparation.
  • Conduct visual inspections and, when qualified, non-destructive testing; perform pressure and leak tests and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Install, repair, and modify valves, flanges, hangers, supports, and related piping accessories.
  • Identify and correct fit-up, material, and installation deficiencies; collaborate with pipefitters, foremen, and other trades to address site challenges.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and follow OSHA, company, and site safety requirements, including PPE and hot-work procedures.
  • Maintain required weld logs, material traceability, and quality documentation, and support project closeout.
  • Travel to assigned project sites, including out-of-town jobs, and work overtime, weekends, or shifts when necessary.
