About The Position

The Welder/Fitter applies welds according to AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel and/or PTTI weldment standards and welding procedure specifications. The role lays out and fabricates materials using engineered drawings, sketches, written work instructions, and verbal instructions, including tanks and related assemblies and components, side frames, and end guides. The position also involves minor repairs to welding and burning equipment, hand burning and grinding, laying out and shooting studs, checking work against drawings, moving materials and parts, retrieving materials from the storeroom and completing draw cards, and maintaining a clean, neat, and safe welding/fabrication cell. Other duties may be assigned by supervisors. The employee must be able to work a steady second shift. The role uses welding and burning equipment, cranes, manlifts, forklifts, grinders, measuring and layout tools, and other shop tools. Required personal protective equipment includes safety glasses, steel-toed leather boots, welding and burning gloves, a welding hood, a burning shield, flame-retardant clothing, fall protection, a respirator, work gloves, and hearing protection. The work involves exposure to welding smoke and fumes, grinding dust, ultraviolet and infrared light, heat, loud or penetrating sounds, elevated decibel levels, hot sparks and spatter, and molten steel. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching or crawling, balancing, stooping, using arms, fingers and hands, communicating, listening, climbing ladders, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 60 pounds. Welders/fitters must meet the specified near-vision acuity standard, with or without corrective lenses, and repeat an eye examination every three years.

Requirements

Must pass welding tests.

Responsibilities

Apply welds according to AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel and/or PTTI weldment standards and WPS.
Lay out and fabricate materials according to engineered drawings, sketches, written work instructions, and verbal instructions.
Perform minor repairs to welding and burning equipment.
Lay out tanks, tank assemblies, covers, cover parts, conservators and their parts, side frames, and end guides using drawings and instructions.
Hand burn and grind materials.
Lay out and shoot studs according to engineered drawings.
Check work against drawings.
Pick up and move materials and parts.
Retrieve material from the storeroom and complete the draw card.
Keep the welding/fabrication cell clean, neat, and safe.
Carry out other duties assigned by supervisors.
