About The Position

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Welder/Fabricator Sergeant at a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility located in Canon City, CO. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and offenders; training and overseeing offender workers in welding skills and procedures and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned projects. This position prepares offenders for community reentry by promoting the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values with integrity and commitment.

Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear, accurate and respectful communication trains and guides offenders in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and offender behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls offenders with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts offenders according to facility policy and limits offender access to restricted areas; position performs offender counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency regulations and policy, position promotes a safe and secure environment.

Operations - position ensures safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective completion of assigned work. Position is responsible for design, installation, remodel, repair and daily maintenance of facility buildings utilizing skills in ARC, MIG and TIG welding of steel, aluminum and stainless steel, plasma cutting, and oxygen/acetylene torch. Position inspects and repairs metal doors, jambs, frames, thresholds, handrails, rest room partitions, food service equipment, laundry equipment, recreation equipment etc...fabricating a variety of structures from verbal directions, sketches, drawings and/or blueprints. Position is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of two industrial grade welders owned by the FCF Maintenance Shop. Position coordinates logistical support with other trades and shops in order to use resources efficiently; monitors progress and quality of work; completes required documentation such as work orders and incident reports; provides assistance as necessary to other operational areas of the maintenance department. This position provides any welding repairs or metal fabrication required to complete FCF Maintenance projects. With prior purchase approval and in accordance with fiscal rules and policies, position maintains adequate inventory of supplies in preparation for urgent and daily needs; monitors inventory levels and usage and tracks issuance of supplies and materials; implements procedures for efficient inventory and elimination of theft, waste and loss; initiates requisitions for additional supply purchases and ensures accountability and proper processing. Position may be assigned to assist other trades supervisors and crews.

Supervision - provides supervision of assigned offender workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs staff and offenders in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and offenders; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and ethical behavior. Participates in offender hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crew and training needs; tracks and calculates offender hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances; inspects work and performs offender evaluations; reduces offender idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare offenders for community reentry. Position may be required to supervise additional offender crews in the absence of other supervisors.

Requirements

• Four (4) years of employment experience that must include ARC, MIG, and TIG welding of steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, as well as plasma cutting and oxygen/acetylene torch work.
• Experience must include non structural or load bearing design, fabrication, and installation of metal structures that are safe and reliable.
• OR: A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with two (2) years employment experience in Building/Equipment Maintenance or Correctional experience for a total of at least four (4) years.
• Building/Equipment Maintenance - includes planning, estimating and performing a variety of "hands on" trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair and/or electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
• Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.
• Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability

• Knowledge of and ability to work with steel, aluminum and stainless steel
• Ability to design, fabricate, repair, and/or install metal structures that are safe and reliable.
• Ability to design, fabricate, repair, and/or install non structural or load bearing metal structures based on verbal descriptions, sketches, drawings, or blueprints.
• Ability to research and plan a welding project from conception to implementation, while considering safety and security, utilizing resources efficiently and coordinating with other trades, work units, and/or other phases of the project.
• Ability to maintain industrial grade welders

• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609.
• The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior, in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph.
• The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.
• Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; DOC cannot provide H-1B sponsorship at this time.
• Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments, and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics.

Nice To Haves
