About The Position

The Electron Beam Welding (EBW) Operator sets up and calibrates equipment, performs welding processes, ensures quality compliance, maintains accurate documentation, and contributes to continuous improvement. The role includes preparing and inspecting parts, configuring and operating EBW equipment according to welding procedures, monitoring weld quality, performing inspections, and maintaining and troubleshooting equipment. Work is performed approximately 90% of the time on the shop floor. The employee works around moving equipment, mechanical parts, ovens, high noise levels, and potential burn hazards, and may occasionally encounter toxic or caustic chemicals and electrical shock risks. Personal protective equipment is required. The role also involves following safety protocols for high-voltage and vacuum systems, wearing radiation monitoring badges, and complying with applicable safety, environmental, company, FMI, and regulatory requirements. The position requires extended periods of standing and sitting, mobility and bending, handling and reaching, close and color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, fine hand dexterity, and the ability to work in controlled environments and cleanrooms. Lifting or moving items up to 40 pounds is required.

  • Experience with quality inspection methods, including nondestructive testing, visual inspection, and dimensional checks.
  • Basic CNC programming knowledge, including G/M code proficiency for equipment-specific EBW operation.
  • Ability to interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading and welding symbols.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-weld inspections and assemble and fixture parts.
  • Read and follow weld drawings, welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), welding schedules, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Prepare and configure the EBW machine according to WPS/PQR requirements.
  • Load and secure workpieces in the vacuum chamber, perform vacuum pump-down, and ensure proper chamber pressure.
  • Set beam parameters, including voltage, current, focus, and travel speed, according to WPS/PQR parameters.
  • Monitor beam alignment and focus during welding and adjust machine settings to maintain weld quality.
  • Inspect welds using destructive and nondestructive methods, including sectioned samples, visual inspection, and MSLT.
  • Document weld parameters from data acquisition (DAQ) and inspection results for traceability.
  • Perform routine EBW equipment maintenance, including filament replacement, vacuum system checks, vacuum pump oil changes, and lubrication.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving beam stability, vacuum leaks, and power supplies.
