About The Position

This position requires approximately 50% production welding and 50% coaching and mentoring of welders, and assisting the Welding Trainer as needed. Work directly with welders on projects to help them learn how to assemble components for welding. Work one-on-one with welders in explaining logic and reasoning in fit-up, tacking, and welding considerations of the build process. Encourage welders to ask questions to ensure they understand expectations and to aid in building self-confidence in their own abilities. Promote, support, and reinforce FVMT’s Quality at the Source practice (QATS) daily with new and existing welders. Promote and support FVMT’s Safety policies, initiatives, and practices. Recommend welders to the Welding trainer that require additional instruction and provide feedback to the Welding Trainer when after the welder re-enters manufacturing. Review weld inspection reports forwarded by weld inspectors regarding weld defects identified during weld inspections. Work with welders to ensure they are properly inspecting welds visually using the proper equipment and techniques. Perform weekly weld audits and report nonconformances to Welding Supervisor, Inspection Supervisor, and Welding Trainer. Assist Welding Trainer in developing special help programs for low achievers. Monitor and enforce welding code and specification requirements. Assist in qualifying welders and weld procedures. Reinforce the importance of accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulness, and good work habits with welders. Monitor the welders’ blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation abilities. Oversee hands-on welder training on the shop floor 1st shift, and 2nd shift (as necessary). Must be able to communicate and problem solve with others in a tactful and professional manner using sound judgement. Performs quarterly welder continuity. Assists Welding Trainer with annual welding practices class. Serve as a back-up to the Welding trainer. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Technical College Vocational diploma in Welding
  • ASNT VT Level II Certification
  • Minimum of 5 years welding experience in a metal fabrication environment required
  • Working knowledge of AWS standards and practices required
  • Accurate blueprint reading experience
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) preferred but not required
  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA welding specifications including Techpubs 248 and 278 is desired but not required
  • Experience in qualifying welders to weld procedure specifications
  • Working knowledge or experience with Miller Electric’s OpenBook welder training program is desired but not required
