About The Position

The Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) is seeking a Web Optimization Consultant to provide technical and strategic support to independent media outlets operating in restrictive environments across Latin America. The consultancy will focus on strengthening the overall performance of participating media websites by optimizing their architecture, content structure, technical performance, user experience, and search engine visibility, with the objective of increasing their visibility, organic traffic, and digital reach. The consultant will conduct technical assessments of the assigned websites and work closely with editorial and technical teams to design and implement improvement plans tailored to each outlet's capacities and needs. The consultancy will also provide guidance on information architecture, technical optimization, SEO, content organization, website performance, accessibility, indexing, web analytics, and best practices to improve the discoverability and consumption of journalistic content. All advisory support must respect the editorial independence of the participating media outlets and strictly comply with IWPR's established security protocols. The consultant must maintain close coordination with IWPR throughout the assignment, demonstrate flexibility to work remotely with teams that may face connectivity limitations or operate under challenging conditions, and strictly adhere to all established security procedures.

Requirements

  • Proven experience (minimum of 5 years) in website optimization, digital consulting, technical SEO, information architecture, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of website architecture, user experience (UX), website performance, technical optimization, indexing, on-page SEO, and best practices for improving search engine visibility.
  • Experience conducting website audits and designing optimization plans with measurable objectives and outcomes.
  • Experience using tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, Semrush, or equivalent platforms for website analysis and optimization.
  • Ability to interpret website performance metrics and develop evidence-based technical and strategic recommendations.
  • Ability to work remotely with teams operating in complex environments or with limited connectivity.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with digital media organizations will be considered an asset but is not a mandatory requirement.
  • Knowledge of English is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide remote, tailored web optimization advisory support to independent media outlets throughout the project implementation period.
  • Conduct technical and functional assessments of websites to identify opportunities for improvement related to information architecture, navigation, performance, accessibility, user experience, SEO, indexing, and content organization.
  • Design and implement web optimization plans tailored to the capacities, resources, and technological platforms of each media outlet.
  • Hold regular virtual meetings with beneficiary media teams to monitor the implementation of recommendations, address questions, and make adjustments throughout the process.
  • Provide technical support for optimizing content structure, taxonomies, internal linking, metadata, page speed, and other elements that contribute to improving overall website performance and search engine visibility.
  • Advise media teams on the use of monitoring and analytics tools to evaluate website performance, interpret results, and prioritize improvement actions.
  • Apply a practical, results-oriented methodology based on continuous follow-up, performance indicators, and documented deliverables.
  • Ensure full compliance at all times with IWPR's security protocols and reporting requirements.
  • Conduct an initial assessment of each assigned website to identify opportunities for improvement and develop a work plan with measurable objectives and performance indicators.
  • Provide technical support throughout the implementation of improvements related to website architecture, performance, user experience, SEO, content organization, and other aspects of web optimization.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize the structure, functionality, and visibility of websites by applying international best practices and standards adapted to the context of independent media outlets.
  • Advise media teams on the use of analytics and monitoring tools to evaluate website performance and prioritize evidence-based improvement actions.
  • Hold regular virtual meetings with beneficiary media teams to monitor the implementation of recommendations, review progress, and address technical challenges.
  • Maintain close coordination with the IWPR team to share progress, identify challenges, recommend adjustments when necessary, and ensure compliance with project objectives, timelines, security protocols, and reporting requirements.
