About The Position

The Water Technician I performs installation, maintenance, and repair of water meters, water lines, and related equipment. The role also includes meter readings, customer service, facility maintenance, water sampling and checks, and emergency response. Work is primarily outdoors and involves physically demanding tasks in varied weather and wet conditions. The position shares an on-call shift for after-hours customer support and emergency response.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to meet the physical demands of medium-to-heavy work, including driving vehicles and equipment; walking uneven terrain; standing for 3–6 hours during main-leak work; bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, shoveling, digging, wading in water and mud up to knee deep, carrying objects weighing 20–50 pounds or more, lifting up to 150 pounds, and climbing in and out of meter pits.

Nice To Haves

Experience operating, maintaining, and repairing potable water facilities.
Water Certification from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B. Continued employment may be contingent on obtaining a CDL within twelve months of employment.

Responsibilities

Perform chlorine-level and bacteriological sampling and checks.
Perform pumping station checks.
Install water meters and meter boxes at new construction sites.
Remove and replace broken or inoperative water meters.
Read water meters.
Address water-line problems and repair leaking water lines.
Answer customer questions and resolve complaints and billing disputes.
Complete work orders and track work using County work order software.
Share an on-call shift for after-hours customer support and emergency response.
Maintain and perform groundskeeping at Water Department properties and facilities, including treatment plants, master meters, tanks, and booster stations.
Assist with asphalt and concrete repairs.
Perform all duties safely and efficiently and complete other duties as assigned by supervision.
