About The Position

Primary responsibility is to assist in providing water safety instruction to the Brooklyn Center Community Center pool patrons. The Water Safety Aide may work any of the following shifts: Tuesdays 5 pm to 8 pm, September 15, 2026, to November 3, 2026 Thursdays 5 pm to 8 pm, September 17, 2026, to November 5, 2026 Saturdays 9 am to 12 pm, September 19, 2026, to November 7, 2026

Requirements

• Must be at least 14 years old
• General knowledge of all swimming strokes
• Must have all appropriate certifications in regards to lifeguarding and must be able to perform those duties.
• Must have the ability to work with diverse groups.
• Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media.
• Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same workstation for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with children
• Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, or Somali
• Must be customer service oriented and have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to speak and write English clearly.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures.
• Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient.
• Must be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives.
• Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.
• Must be able to assess problems and situations, able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
• Must have a knowledge of utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to initiate use of available resources.

• Must have knowledge of Red Cross passing requirements for each skill level.
• Must be prepared and organized for all lessons.

Responsibilities

• Teach skills in accordance with the American Red Cross and the Brooklyn Center Aquatics Program standards.
• Assist Water Safety Instructors, including but not limited to class management, equipment, and safety.
• Promote, teach and maintain the safety of all class participants
• Enforce and follow all facility policies, rules and regulations.
• Performs other duties as assigned or apparent
• Actively participate in the lesson experience (ex. sing songs, play games, and demonstrate leadership)
• Help set up/put away equipment and maintain an organized pool environment
• Help with testing & filling out report cards
• Assist with other duties as requested or assigned
