About The Position

Operates and maintains a treatment facility for neutralization, metal precipitation, and complexed metals removal, specifically Zinc. The role involves collecting, treating, and disposing of sludge generated by these treatment processes. Duties include regular testing of samples, monitoring reagent levels, recording meter readings, cleaning and calibrating equipment, making chemical adjustments to meet EPA or city standards, and performing routine maintenance and repairs on the wastewater treatment system. The operator must also respond to system imbalances, troubleshoot issues, and maintain a clean and safe work environment. Specific tasks vary slightly depending on the assigned area (PC 1, PC 3).

Responsibilities

Operates and maintains treatment facility for neutralization, metal precipitation, and complexed metals removal (Zinc).
Collects, treats, and disposes of sludge generated by treatment processes.
Tests grab samples for Zinc and performs Imhoff tests every two hours.
Checks levels of reagent tanks.
Reads and records turbidity meter readings daily (PC 1 only).
Cleans turbidity meter once a day.
Collects readings for high and low set points on pH and ORP (PC 1 only).
Collects and tests 24-hour composite samples for metal concentrations.
Makes necessary chemical changes and/or adjustments to ensure compliance with EPA or city standards.
Cleans and calibrates probes once per shift.
Performs assignments from the daily check list once per shift.
Fills out Statistical Process Control Charts (SPC) as required.
Checks bulk caustic and bulk sulfuric acid weekly.
Responds to imbalances in the WWT system, including malfunctions of chemical metering pumps, pH/ORP probes, and changes in chemistry applications.
Recharges DI unit as needed (PC 3 only).
Performs nickel recovery tests.
Blows down sand filter three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
Checks the rectifier for EP pots and ensures power is set correctly.
Pumps, cleans, and refills EP pots with new solution on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Checks rectifier settings, pot functionality, and chrome solution levels once per shift, adding chrome solution as needed.
Tests PPM and pH on nickel rinse and NRU product once per shift.
Makes up or requests nickel reagents for testing.
Visually checks sprays on chrome rinses and adjusts metering valves.
Tests for iron in the evaporator once per week.
Cleans and empties the filter press that separates and dries sludge.
Distributes sludge evenly into the hopper for later removal.
Replaces filter press cloth when needed.
Arranges for sludge removal as needed.
Checks moisture balance each time the filter press is cleaned.
Performs acid cleaning of the filter press once per week (rotates shifts).
Sends out a sample of sludge for analysis when the hopper is half-full (1st shift operator).
Performs routine general maintenance, minor repairs, and upkeep on the WWT system, including pumps, motors, and plumbing.
Orders chemicals and supplies as needed (1st shift only).
Checks emergency shower and hazardous waste areas weekly (1st shift only).
Manages UPS mailings, recording, weighing, and logging of mailing slips (PC 1 only).
Records daily activities and readings in assigned logs.
Performs computer input of chemical usage (PC 3 only).
Cleans up all chemical spills or hazardous waste immediately.
Cleans up all water on floors.
Maintains a clean and safe work environment at all times.
Performs other job duties as assigned by the supervisor.
