About The Position

This role involves operating and maintaining a treatment facility for neutralization, metal precipitation, and complexed metals removal, specifically Zinc. The operator will be responsible for collecting, treating, and disposing of sludge generated by these processes. Duties include regular testing of samples, monitoring equipment, making chemical adjustments to meet EPA or city standards, performing maintenance, and ensuring a clean and safe work environment. The position requires the ability to learn Statistical Process Control and offers on-the-job training.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain treatment facility for neutralization, metal precipitation, and complexed metals removal (Zinc).
  • Collect, treat, and dispose of sludge generated by treatment processes.
  • Test grab samples for Zinc every 2 hours.
  • Perform an imhoff test every two hours.
  • Check levels of reagent tanks.
  • Read and record turbidity meter readings hourly (PC 1 only) and clean the meter once a day.
  • Collect readings for high and low set points on pH and ORP (PC 1 only).
  • Collect and test 24-hour composite samples for metal concentrations.
  • Make necessary chemical changes and/or adjustments to ensure compliance with EPA or city standards.
  • Clean and calibrate probes once per shift.
  • Perform assignments from the daily check list once per shift.
  • Fill out Statistical Process Control Charts (SPC) as required.
  • Check bulk caustic and bulk sulfuric acid weekly.
  • Respond to imbalances in the WWT system, including malfunctioning equipment and changes in chemistry.
  • Recharge DI unit as needed (PC 3 only).
  • Perform nickel recovery test.
  • Blow down sand filter three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
  • Check rectifier for EP pots, ensure correct power settings, and manage pot maintenance (pumping, cleaning, refilling with solution).
  • Test PPM and pH on nickel rinse and NRU product once per shift.
  • Make up or request nickel reagents for testing.
  • Visually check sprays on chrome rinses and adjust metering valves.
  • Test for iron weekly in the evaporator.
  • Clean and empty the filter press, distributing sludge evenly into the hopper.
  • Replace filter press cloth when needed.
  • Arrange for sludge removal.
  • Check moisture balance each time the filter press is cleaned.
  • Acid clean filter press weekly (rotate shifts).
  • Send out a sample of sludge for analysis when the hopper is half-full (1st shift only).
  • Perform routine general maintenance, minor repair, and upkeep on the WWT system.
  • Order chemicals and supplies as needed (1st shift only).
  • Check emergency shower and hazardous waste areas weekly (1st shift only).
  • Handle UPS mailings and recording, weighing, and logging of mailing slips (PC 1 only).
  • Record daily activities and readings in assigned logs.
  • Input chemical usage into the computer (PC 3 only).
  • Clean up all chemical spills or hazardous waste immediately and clean up water on floors.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by the supervisor.
