About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated Waste Technician with experience in the management of radioactive and hazardous waste as indicated in the responsibilities listed below. In this onsite position, you will be joining our waste management team and working with radiation safety and production. Members of this team support hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste materials management, and waste management functions critical to Nusano’s mission.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and training on state and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste management, transportation, and disposal.
  • Hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste material coursework and/or experience working with hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes.
  • Familiarity with chemical reference materials (SDS).
  • Ability to interpret information in order to solve problems and/or complete work assignments.
  • Ability to follow protocols and policies and apply technical and regulatory information to complete work assignments and to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to select, use and maintain specialized personnel protective equipment necessary for working with hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste materials.
  • Be able to determine the safe, proper, and appropriate method necessary carrying out job assignments.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and perform assigned tasks from verbal / written instructions and established policies and procedures.
  • Good interpersonal communication and ability to respond courteously and quickly to customer concerns and needs as required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, and independently with supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer support in a respectful, supportive, and service-oriented manner.
  • Ability to use computer systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Qualified Radiological Worker (or equivalent) with at least 3 years of experience
  • Experience working as a Junior Radiation Control Technician (RCT)
  • Experience managing waste in hot cell environments
  • Forklift certification and operating experience
  • Experience handling radioactive material casks
  • Experience operating a bridge crane

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, manage industrial, hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste generated onsite in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations, and Nusano policies and procedures.
  • Collect hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste from production hot cells, laboratories, shops, offices and designated waste accumulation areas. Laboratory waste and non-routine waste may need to be placed into containers. Verify the composition and labeling accurately represents the waste being collected. Perform basic segregation and packaging in accordance with on-site transportation requirements. Involves routine and frequent heavy labor tasks.
  • Provide waste management guidance to other departments.
  • Segregate and package hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste in accordance with applicable regulations and disposal site requirements, which include waste and container compatibility requirements and meeting specific site’s waste acceptance criteria.
  • Deliver empty containers (i.e., metal, poly drums, boxes, pails, etc.) of various sizes/dimensions to generators as needed. Some containers used to store bulk waste (i.e., drums, waste boxes, etc.) may require use of forklift.
  • Perform processing of waste brought into the waste management processing and storage areas, including physical inspections, consolidating, weighing, segregation, solidification, neutralization, and encapsulation. Some of these activities will be conducted within a hot cell. Properly mark, label, and segregate wastes brought into the facility.
  • Remotely operate a bridge crane to place containers in high rad storage.
  • Package and prepare wastes for shipment to off-site treatment/disposal facilities in accordance with Nusano procedures, the offsite facility packaging guidelines, and Department of Transportation (DOT) shipping requirements. Label and mark waste shipping containers.
  • Ensure that the waste data is properly entered into the inventory database in a timely manner.
  • Inspect areas where waste is being generated. Verify waste is being stored, and managed per state, federal, local regulations. Notify appropriate personnel of any non-compliance issues.
  • Work with emergency response personnel in situations involving hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste materials, such as spill clean-up.
  • Maintain and inspect the waste processing and storage areas, waste pick-up vehicles and associated supplies.
  • Report problems to manager as appropriate.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as assigned, sweeping, mopping, dusting, rainwater removal, etc.
  • Work with Nusano’s electronic databases (e.g., MS Excel, tracking software)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
