Washington Investigations Reporter (Newsperson)
About The Position
The Associated Press (AP) is seeking an energetic journalist with a proven track record of breaking world-class investigative stories to join its Investigative team in Washington. The reporter will focus on uncovering hidden stories related to power and politics, collaborating with other AP team members and staff. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild. The role involves seeking out distinct, "Only on AP" journalism across all media formats, with a focus on creative storytelling for mobile, digital, and social media platforms, including the integration of data into investigations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. is mandatory.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
- At least five years of full-time experience as an investigative reporter or editor at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

- Demonstrated excellence as an investigative reporter or editor with a strong record of delivering exclusive and distinctive investigative reporting on both breaking news and long-term projects.
- Prior experience as a beat reporter or investigative reporter in Washington.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member, with a proven track record of collaborating with colleagues from other desks.
- Ability to explain complex stories clearly and compellingly on tight deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
- Professional competency in a language besides English.
Responsibilities
- Initiate investigations focused on government and corporate accountability and/or national security matters.
- Utilize public records laws and cultivate a network of sources in the nation's capital, including lobbyists and lawyers.
- Demonstrate strong news sense, high energy, and a drive for scoops.
- Produce in-depth journalism within short timeframes (a couple of days) while simultaneously progressing on long-term projects (months-long).
- Pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques, including the use of artificial intelligence, while adhering to AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.
- Be available and willing to work nights and weekends as coverage demands, reflecting AP's 24/7 operational nature.
